The one thing you bring coming from a product data scientist role is that you understand product and using data to make decisions relating to it. That is mainly where they intersect, from there if I were hiring it would be about where first I have to believe you have the skills needed to work with different groups that comprise building the product from the engineering team, marketing team, data science team, sales team, the business side, etc. and have the interpersonal, communication, leadership and emotional intelligence skills to be able to talk to all these different people and know how you need to communicate with each and what they care about. Be able to manage and influence them from the bottom without any actual authority
Second, and this is why many companies will not take a risk on you unless you’ve shown that you actually have experience doing what I just mentioned above not just to show that you have what it takes which is important in of itself, but that you actually enjoy it. You have no idea how many people think product management is sexy and they will like it only to find out what it really entails and how much a pain in the *ss some things can be. If you’re the type that hates being in meetings all day, forget about it, that’s the majority of your job. If you don’t like asking for things, getting people to show up to meetings, following up with the different people to make sure they’ll be ready for a meeting with what was requested a month back, you’ll hate it. I’m saying these things not to scare you off, but just letting you know what they are looking for and why it may not be easy to convince someone you can without some certain experience
Nah
Deloitte has neither as a mature capability. We think we do but in reality we are not setup for (successful) product, try as we may.
Depends on your comfort with the expected role responsibilities. Work is quite different in both roles.
