How soon is too soon to be preparing for a lateral move? I did my 1L summer internship in a niche area of securities law, loved it, took courses on it. I decided I wanted to explore securities law a little more broadly and not to pigeonhole myself. The firm I’m at is great—doing sec lit—but has zero work in that niche area that I liked. I’m afraid that I am passing on a passion, and I don’t want to get too “old” for a firm to take me on if I have zero experience in a specialty area. Advice? Thx

I don’t think it’s too early. Many summers split their 2L summer after their 1L summer. I think you could adequately explain to another firm why you aren’t returning to your 1L or why you are interested in splitting based on what you said above.

If this is correct- “lateral” isn’t really applicable to you. If you get an offer at this firm that doesn’t have the area you like, you don’t have to accept it. You can pivot anytime while in law school, or apply to and accept a position in a completely different field. If you’re interested in this niche area, try applying to firms that have that niche and expand your focus away from your 2L summer firm. You never know until you apply- you could also reconnect with the 1L firm and see if they’re hiring in that group

Definitely split your 2L summer
