How the bleep does anyone find a way to even try to get a job to leave private practice when you’re barely surviving each day with billable work? If you successfully found a way job hunt while fully employed how did you do it? It’s become a huge added stressor and I’m about to break down from ALL OF IT (work, deadlines, meetings with people to do informational interviews, job apps)

I hired a freelancer from upwork for 4 dollars an hour to apply to things.

I was in a similar boat last January. I billed 240+ hours and had 2 deals close while trying to balance all of the above. I decided that my weekday mornings (6-7am) and Sunday mornings were reserved for looking for jobs, emailing recruiters, polishing the resume, applying/writing cover letters if needed. And then any interviews I did I made sure to schedule during the lunch window. It’s less suspicious and usually the partners you work for are most understanding if you go MIA during lunch. It’s overwhelming no doubt about that, but once you start getting further into the interview processes, you’ll also feel a shift from trying to do everything you can to please your current partners and have your mind more set on the future. Hope this helps. You got this!

This. Set a aside a block of time—however little, and set benchmarks for yourself. E.g., today from 6am-7am, I’m going to look for job postings, tomorrow I’m going to tailor my resume for job posting one, the next day I’m going to tailor my resume for job posting two, etc. it’ll take some time but you’ll make steady progress and eventually find something.

This above is great advice. As I got into the swing of it, I also booked early interviews (like 8 or 9 am). I blocked off for “appointments” if I had to. I also signed up for daily email alerts from goinhouse, LinkedIn, Glassdoor, etc so I didn’t have to mine myself. Always apply from your personal laptop, although that should go without saying. Good luck!

It’s very difficult and I definitely had an interview or two (or three) torpedoed by firm work (stress knocking me off my game, lacking sleep, rushing to get there on time, etc.).

Apply on weekends or at night in batches. Do your best to clear time in your schedule before and after the interview so you have time to settle down and also time in case the interview is going well and running over. It’s ultimately a numbers game, though, and conflicting demands like this is one reason why.

like

I’m in the process right now and it’s overwhelming for sure. Like others have said, I apply to a batch of jobs over the weekend and prep for interviews as they arise. I am also working with a couple of recruiters that reached out to me, but I’m not 100% sure they actually saved me any time since I had to do informational calls with a lot of them. Although, I guess I didn’t need to do as much salary research since all the recruiters I worked with were upfront with salary range so I could nix jobs that didn’t meet my salary expectations right off the bat. But I’d say the hardest part for me is squeezing in interviews. I’ve been scheduling them first thing in the morning and at lunch (but sometimes it can be hard to switch gears for an interview in the middle of the work day). Another time I scheduled 3 zoom interviews for one day and took a sick day. Not going to lie though, I’m exhausted and still have couple more rounds of interviews for some positions.

The single session is all I'm asking but could certainly turn into a longer lasting coaching relationship (at no cost), if you like.

Considering where real estate is, I'm trying to decide what to do...

I bought a townhouse at the bottom of the market in 2011 for 230k. Still owe about 150k, and currently worth about 500-530k.

I moved out last August after getting married but I didn't sell since I knew I could, and am, renting for about $800/month more than it costs me all in.

I believe I have another year to decide if I want to sell and make use of primary residence exclusion from cap gains on sale.

Do I sell or hold?

Anyone else find it INSANE that PTO does not count towards your billable hour requirement. If you take a week off (40 hours), you’re really not getting paid time off if you have to make up all of that billable time before the end of the year.

Am I missing something or is that just absurd?
