Being a leader doesn't mean you have all the answers but it does mean you know how to go out and get them. You hire smart, creative people for a reason. Let them help you.
Opportunities to show a little humility can actually help you grow and solidify the trust of your team. It’s SO much better to acknowledge that you’re struggling and pull your team in to work through it together than to pretend to know something you don’t. As long as you provide leadership and structure through that process, you’re still showing up the way you should be.

(Also, your boss and lateral to you colleagues can be helpful. And, I used to report to the CEO and he'd ask me occasionally for advice, too.)
Fake it until you make it.
I lean on other ADs a lot for advice, and they do the same. We’ve formed a good support group together. I also reach out to team members asking their opinions on things. I still help guide the process but they all know things I don’t and like to be asked.
Approach your boss with the challenge and some solutions you were considering. Be honest and candid that you’re struggling to decide on the best way forward and ask if he or she has thoughts. It’s ok not to have all the answers. But approach people for help with some ideas for them to react to (you may already have it!) but also the humility to ask for help and guidance. Sometimes the humility is actually driven by wisdom and experience. Those that don’t know that are whack. And then once you align on the solve, share it out and execute it amongst your team with great confidence along with answers to their questions.
We’re all humans here, and we are all still learning every single day. Just because you ask a question doesn’t mean you don’t deserve your position. Never be afraid to ask!
