How to balance between busy matters? I have a meeting at 6pm and 8pm today for 2 active matters. Client made lots of comments at the 6pm call, so I suddenly had a lot to fix tonight. In the middle of my 8pm call for the other matter, my senior checked on me twice for the progress of my work, the second one having a bit of an aggressive tone. Would there be consequences if I get a bad review and how should I balance these in the future?

This senior can die mad- tell him/her you are on a call until XX time and will run the changes after that. Communication is key- set expectations that you can exceed

Do they know about your 8pm call? I keep everyone in the loop about what else I have going on for the week so there are no surprises and if there is an issue, the partners can argue amongst themselves as to which matter is more “important.” For example, I was assigned a research assignment Monday, and when the partner assigned it I told him I expect another partner to come back from vacation this week and assign me something that I suspect he will want to go out end of the week so if that happens I might need more time—I’ll keep you updated as soon as I find out. I do this with as many tasks as possible

You can only do what you do. Sounds like a crappy place to be so if there were consequences (most of the time there are not) count your blessings because it does not sound like a good place to work.

This is so so so dysfunctional. Dude this is NOT healthy or reasonable on your part. Tell them to pound sand, that you’re busy and doing your best, and then don’t give it a second thought. How TF can you possibly think you’re doing anything wrong here??

Hi fellow consultants - I am working on an internal project for my company. I am hoping you can help with 3 easy questions:
1. What company do you work for?
2. From a timesheet/utilization standpoint, what does your company consider as a work week? (e.g, 40 hours, 50 hours)
3. How many hours are you expected to work in a week?

The client began asking me to do more and more, including revamping their system and internal trainings. The client even gave me a litigation matter. Suddenly, the partner became more involved. I was removed from meetings concerning the revamping, my trainings were cancelled, and he started micromanaging. He has now sidelined me from the project and trash talked me to the client. I am very upset.

Hey all - first year associate here… I’ve met my hours requirement for this year (requirement is 1900 and am currently at around 2050 with billable hours - approx. 2160 with non billable admin hours) and I am just tired. Is it okay to just “disappear” during the holidays (thanksgiving week, week of Christmas) and let partners and senior associates know I am not available? At this point I don’t care about making more money - I just want to sleep, read a good trashy book, and cuddle with my dog.
