Stay at a firm for ~15 years and you will get it

Ability to sell and bring in revenue. You can’t inherit a book anymore, you’ve got to prove that you can bring in new clients. If you’re wicked smart and are a walking IRC or GAAP equivalent you may have a very rare shot at it, but creating sales and revenue trumps all.

You do buy in, but it is through a loan that the firm coordinates. So it’s not like you need to save up money for your equity contribution. It’s more logistics than anything. It’s also why first year partners don’t make much more than their last year as senior manager, but then it ramps up significantly after that.

like

@PwC3 the interest on the buyin loan is tax deductible and typically less than the return on the capital from the Firm (at least in our Firm)

like

If and once you make it, you are required to buy in. Buy in amount Depends on firm.

like

At PwC the “buy in” is relatively small and it’s funded by loans, which you pay back over 10 years. You earn interest on your capital which is greater than the interest expense on the debt, so you have positive arbitrage. The firm does all the admin. Frankly it’s painless.

Most of it is a loan. There may be some cash but nothing too significant. I look at it as just another investment.

Most talented partner material end up going to industry and take C suite position. Smart partners figure this out early.

Not true, those who can’t Partner go to industry for those jobs. Anything non client service is second rate, anything else is something you tell your partner to keep coming home with you.

Stop worrying about the loan. It’s not a thing. See my post on Partner One.

What’s the most important thing to do to have the chance at making partner (besides sticking around)?
