How to break into PE post MBA (HSW) if I have consulting (ACN) but no I-bank exp? I’m good with financial modeling, so I don’t think the technical interview would be a problem. And if I do break in, would my opportunities be limited in the future for any reason? (Ex. MBB -> I can get on partner track...can I ever hope to get on a similar track at KKR, etc. if I try to break in and join a smaller fund first?)

Don’t listen to BCG 1. People do lateral in PE (MM/UMM to MF and vice versa), but there just aren’t that many seats opening up beyond a certain level and it only gets more competitive as you get older.

No to KKR. Megafunds like that literally have a mold for partner track (target UG -> top bank -> top fund -> H/S -> top fund to partner) Your best bet is to look for small family offices or LMM that don’t have a structured hiring process

like

That’s part of the risk, it’s very unstructured. Even with megafunds and established MMs, it’s hard to move up past associate/senior associate. Personally if you are able to swing a role post MBA into what you described I would 100% take it, since the market is so competitive at this point. That should be able to set you up with something else along a similar brush stroke (maybe Corp dev at a Fortune 500, more stability) if the PE firm doesn’t have a defined route for you to move up

like

As noted above, PE is ridiculously competitive. Take a step back. Doesn’t matter where you go for bschool. Let’s say you go to a top 10 program. You’re competing not only with ex-PE and bankers, but also ex-cons (hah!) like yourself, which makes it 10x harder. No one cares about your modeling skills, though yes, that is very important if/when you do get an interview. You’ll have to network aggressively to get your foot in the door and start thinking right now how you’re gonna differentiate yourself. What do you mean by limiting future opportunities? I’ll tell you right now (please disprove me but take this from someone who’s done everything you’re asking above), you’re not going to make inroads at a mega fund. Your best bet is def a MM or LMM shop, which will still give you the same benefits, experience and opportunities. Don’t be short sighted. Go into the industry because you want to. Don’t go after a specific firm. PE has an imaginary boundary around it that is hard to break unless you have the academic and work pedigree.

like

Yes, grab the oppty. I hope you’re in a position to decide between multiple firms but if my experience is any gauge, that won’t happen. It’s very, very difficult to make traction with PE firms. It’s a pedigree and networking based job. Also, are you targeting Ops or investing roles? I don’t think anyone will ever consider you for an investing role with an ERP consulting background. Your best bet would be to get plugged in on the ops side and help portco’s with their ERP strategy and implementation. That’s what they’ll be slating you for, anyway. Can you share more about your background so I can try giving you some more tangible perspective? Feel free to DM me.

Hi Tax Bowlers, I'm an experienced associate (2yrs) in a Big 4 Transfer Pricing division. I have reached a point in my career where I am considering taking up a professional certification. Several colleagues recommended taking up either ACCA or CFA, however, I see little connection between these certifications and the work that I am currently doing, and what I plan to do in the future. What would you guys suggest? Would it be detrimental to my career if I did not take up any certifications?
