Alvarez & Marsal How to convince a firm to interview me at a higher level than they’re interviewing me for?

They want me in the health practice and I have 5+ years of relevant industry experience and a masters degree and they still want me to enter at the senior analyst level. Seems a bit off to me? Kearney AlixPartners Boston Consulting Group Colliers International Alvarez & Marsal
any insight on the above firms in terms of work culture, benefits, salary, for an SBA or Assc.?

Also, interview tips?

What are you doing now? I’d almost prefer the sba role and crush it. Coming into consulting at a post mba role without 4 years of consulting experience is hard (even for those with an mba and business acumen). I wouldn’t want to hop straight from industry to consulting while also pushing for a role up one.

Even people from other consulting firms lateral in and struggle, just for context (at one of the firms you mentioned)

like

No slack. 1 step “back” , 2 steps forward.

Crushing it only helps your brand and credibility. Will make the transition that much easier and set you up for so much more success long term

Depends on the firm. At alix, 5 years industry and no consulting experience will get you our “entry” level position.

like

Start low and wow everyone. Much better approach

like

Thanks everyone. But as someone whose almost 28, do you think I’ll get slack for starting low?

funny

Started late after time in Industry and I’d say don’t take the cut unless the pay is upto par with your expectations. The truth is work is work, and fast track isn’t a guarantee. You’ll start head bashing with juniors who are 23/24 and you won’t have the say to express your opinion merely due to title…. Get the best offer you can and strive to prove that you are at the level you deserve. Ps. If you have Industry knowledge you will outpace most people who have the consulting know how, but are generalists in that field

Why do you keep referring to 28 as old? I'm an SC wt 27 (I also have a masters a previous work experience and started in consulting a bit late) and I believe I'm doing better than my 2-3 years younger peers and in most cases upward managing the managers who are my age, no one really cares (or notices) my age and on the long run I don't think it'd matter much
On the other hand, I've seen more experienced hires with non-consulting experience struggling at the same SC role, imagine how it would be if they were hired as managers and are expected to guide junior team members

Management skills are always relevant sure, which is why a couple years of previous somewhat relevant work would make you a better SC, but at the M role you're expected to just know things that non-consultants wouldn't know and not just leading people
Dor example I see a Harvard MA ex World Bank economist colleague who got hired as manager struggling everyday with things like how to structure a proposal or a deliverable, how to navigate the firm's internal resources, what to say or not say to clients or even how to make slides, all of which are not necessarily complex tasks I agree, but just that at M you don't receive much guidance and you're expected to know things and actually help guide juniors, imagine how it's like for someone coming from an operations or a technical background for example who never had to deal with PowerPoint or develop a simple budget or even knows what a bid bond is

Start preparing for SSC CGL(mainly target this exam). There are a hell lot of opportunities if you clear this exam and these jobs provides a lot of job respect in the society.
Even if the salary is 60-70k (starting salary) but the job security and the facilities are simply incomparable with the IT jobs.

Don't waste your time & energy in the ruthless labor market just for money.

Anxiety before your sales demos?

Do these 2 things I used to do to get over it:

1. Know the product inside out - it will take time for you to gain confidence in your sales abilities but if you know the product will you’ll be more confident in that domain.

2. Do more demos - the more calls and presentations you do the more comfortable you’ll get. My advice is to try to get on a lot of presentations, even with leads that aren’t so good.
