Realize that your career is only one aspect of who you are as a person, and that the relative emphasis you put in your career versus your family, your friends, your community, your religion, your whatever is 100% up to you and should not be driven by societal norms about where you should be focused

A hearty yes to what EY1 said. I spent 13 years busting my ass for PA because I thought nothing was better than a highly successful career. I completely lost myself in the process, only to be laid off (this year) once my head caught up with my heart and I realized partner wasn't what I truly wanted. What a giant smack across the face...all those years I said no to friends and family so that I could excel in my career instead. In hindsight, 100%, completely totally worthless. Don't make work such a huge priority. When you are older, loved ones will be there for you, not your career/company/co-workers.

^good advice. Also it’s never too late to take your career in an entirely new direction, despite what people on here will tell you

I can attest to SM1. I didn't have 13 years in public accounting, but the job finally took a serious toll on my health to the extent I developed some conditions and I finally saying I quit. If you're disciplined you can stay in good health with good habits. If you're already starting from a bad spot like myself... It can really grind you down. You have one body, one life, and a limited time on Earth with friends and family.

Shooting for partner is a definite sacrifice with very nice compensation guarantees that would be difficult to match in industry except with the most generous and lucky equity arrangements. Truth is that many people will never make partner money even those in the controller and CFO chair in industry.

Comes with a cost though. Time. Time is one resource in limited supply.

SM1 nailed it. Family and friends will mean more in the long run than your accomplishments in your career. It took me a long time to realize that and as soon as I did my goals and priorities in life were much easier to decipher.

Servus zusammen,

Senior Director level role in a larger, established company with a very complex suite of solutions (that are boring to you and you don’t feel a connection to) but with amazing benefits, $245 tc plus more bonuses, fully remote, good manager and good team or a senior PMM role at a growth start up with a product you are excited about and feel 💯 connected to, manager seems good, product seems straight forward, opportunity to grow the team in future, tc tbd but assuming tbc

What if our company paid us a nice bonus now if we are >100% utilized, then had a clause that we would have to pay it back if we left within 1 - 3 years. Something like this may resolve the retention issue.
