WiFi is the tap water that you get at home
Cellular data is bottled water
You can drink bottled water at home but you’re wasting money. Best to drink tap water at home.
When outside, it’s best to drink bottled water because tap water available outside may not be safe (unsecure WiFi)
Yes, this one is great!!!
Tap water vs bottled water analogy should help.
Conceptually: they are the exact same except
WiFi comes from a box (router) and is owned by a location (house, building)
Cellular data is owned by your phone
Actual usage:
When in a building the building has a box with WiFi
When not in a building you will use your cellular data from your phone
It’s a series of tubes *gestures to toilet paper roll and paper towel roll*
Water bottle analogy is good. If they have a data limit on cellular you can say that it is like local vs long distance calling back in the day. When they are at home using WiFi it's like a local call, but once they leave the house it's long distance. Helped me cut down an older family member's data usage when there were caps...
Just say cellular is like WiFi for the world
*that you potentially pay for, depending on your plan
Do you have to? The lines are blurring for practical purposes.
Home food vs. home delivery!
Former is cheaper, healthier and available at home 🤪
Tell them cellular data costs lots of money.
Portability
Try explaining the cloud versus on prem. And then vow missile guidance systems work. Or just ask them if they know how to change their Apple ID password. Same result.
I’ve used tv antennas as an example for older folks in my family.
Cellular data comes from giant antennas (towers) outside.
Wifi is connected to your home through a cable and a boxed antenna (router) directly to your home.
The home antenna will be cheaper than the one outside.
