How to explain your hours to people? I've noticed friends can get upset/judgy when I can only do late nights/my family feels offended when I have to do some work during visits. "It's just a job" 🤦

I explain to them that I only capitalize on approximately 70-80% of the time I spend working. I explain that I have to work 10 hours to bill 7.5. I use concrete examples like 1) I can’t bill to clean my office or do admin tasks, 2) go to the kitchen, 3) talk to coworkers, 4) attend continuing education classes, etc.

I also explain that don’t really get “time off.” My billable requirement is the same whether I take 3 weeks vacation or I don’t. Any sick day has to be made up somewhere. That seems to help.

like

Yes! The concrete examples seems to be what helps the most. People don’t tend to understand it initially because it’s so unusual.

like

My parents come from a blue collar/union background and really just didn’t get it at first. One thing that helped is telling them my billable rate. When my dad heard how much I charge clients he said “well no wonder they feel like they can call you at any time of the day or night. They should at that rate!”

Most friends understand and respect trying to earn as much as possible to chip away at student loan debt. Same thing goes for family - hard to guilt trip you when the reason you’re working is because you’re paying for your schooling yourself.

like

So true. Will use the student loan stuff for sure. I think most people think just because you go into law you're automatically rich. 🙃

When you agree to meet after work for drinks but end up having to stay later than expected: "ugh you always do that. I don't understand why you don't just leave. It's already past 5pm. "

like

Just tell them the truth. Sometimes it’s hard for people to understand who haven’t lived that life. I am lucky (sort of) that all of my family worked or has worked in jobs that require that amount of time. But some people will never understand. You just have to be honest and hope that they don’t respond in a dickish way

Apologize but explain the work is hard and requires a lot of hours.

Lawyering is just time consuming. Sorry they don’t get it.

I’m an associate at a boutique law firm working on complex litigation and regulatory matters. I’ve worked at the same firm as a summer associate and the last three years directly after graduation. I’m worried that I’m not getting enough “practical” experience. I haven’t taken a deposition, only attended two oral arguments, and tend to write parts of briefs or motions but never in their entirety. (Continued in comments)

Comp question: I’m in plaintiff litigation in a major east coast city. I receive $148k base, and have been making another $150k or so in commissions. Excited to be switching from ID to PI. Got a good vibe from the partners and spoke with a current associate who said good things. Then I talked to a colleague who said they’ve heard bad things about the firm. Took the wind right out of my sails. But then I thought any firm will have people saying good and bad things about it, and I’d argue that most gossip about firms, especially second hand, is generally negative. So I’m undeterred and still looking forward to my new position.

So I got 2 offers, 1 at a well-known firm (that I previously worked at, not as an atty) that offered 80K plus full benefits (100% health coverage, PTO, sick days, discretionary bonus & 1800 billable req.) Their a little old school in their methods but I do see the younger gen. coming in to make changes. 2nd offer is at a newer firm however i’ve heard great things, and they offered 80k, unl. PTO, 1500 billable hours, bonus incentives qrtrly, & 50% health ins. WHY can’t I make a decision? HELP

I did not meet my billable budget. I’m a 1st year and around mid October realized I was going to have to bill 8-9 hours a day before the end of this month to meet my budget, and planned to. However, my dad passed mid October which caused me to take time off. I’m about 200 hours behind, though. My boss said not to worry about it as they are understanding about me needing to take time off, but I’m still worried that this looks really bad…

Thoughts on leaving a job due to poor management and communication? What level of oversight is normal in midlaw boutique litigation firms? I am a 4th year and starting to feel like I get zero feedback unless it's bad and am just left alone most of the time unless I harass the partner for some input. Then once he pays attention it's just beratement for not doing things the same way he would have. I need more experience with a partner who is present and available, am I being unreasonable?
