Started in Maritime/Shipping and it's my 7th year in it now.
I would say unless you are in a major shipping law hub like London, Singapore, HK or to a lesser extent Piraeus/Hamburg, I would say it will be difficult to cross over just because of the lack of opportunities available in other cities.
Your best bet would be "dry" work as the work is still based off basic contractual principles. If you are looking for "wet" work, then it would next to nil.
Getting qualified in England & Wales would be a huge benefit. Hardly any global shipping dispute falls under any US state jurisdiction.
Friend of mine did it insurance defense for shipping companies, including vessel inspections, incident reports to etc. in Miami, but like mentioned above the jobs at hard to find. There is a fair amount of slip and fall plaintiffs work in Miami due to cruise industry, or was when people were cruising.
Doesn’t New Orleans have a robust maritime practice?
For a US port - yes since I have had a few cases involving pollution and collision in/around the Mississippi River in Louisiana when I'm based in London.
