Started in Maritime/Shipping and it's my 7th year in it now.

I would say unless you are in a major shipping law hub like London, Singapore, HK or to a lesser extent Piraeus/Hamburg, I would say it will be difficult to cross over just because of the lack of opportunities available in other cities.

Your best bet would be "dry" work as the work is still based off basic contractual principles. If you are looking for "wet" work, then it would next to nil.

Getting qualified in England & Wales would be a huge benefit. Hardly any global shipping dispute falls under any US state jurisdiction.

Friend of mine did it insurance defense for shipping companies, including vessel inspections, incident reports to etc. in Miami, but like mentioned above the jobs at hard to find. There is a fair amount of slip and fall plaintiffs work in Miami due to cruise industry, or was when people were cruising.

Doesn’t New Orleans have a robust maritime practice?

For a US port - yes since I have had a few cases involving pollution and collision in/around the Mississippi River in Louisiana when I'm based in London.

Has anyone lateraled from big law into an in-house role at one of your firm’s clients? I feel like this happens quite a lot and curious how that process went (did you reach out to them, they to you, etc)? I’m in my second year and staffed on a large client & starting to develop a relationship which I’d like to maintain. I’m thinking about hanging in here for another year or two but then starting to look to lateral. Would love to work for this company if a position is available at that time.

Talk some logic into me please. Been seeing someone for 2 months. We both agreed we aren’t ready for exclusivity & don’t know if we see long term with each other (both have been divorced & hesitant to hop into anything) but that we wanted to continue to see how things develop. We both been on dates with other people. He shared he went on a 2nd date with someone last night & it went well. Why do I feel so cruddy? I’m thinking about what if he likes that person more than me, & commits to them

My firm has a collections budget (80% of your billable rate x 1850 hours) and an hourly budget that must be met in order to be eligible for a bonus. The firm cares very little about originations and will reward someone for making their collections over someone who brings in new work. I missed my collection budget due to some odd timing with a client, but originated more than all my peers so no bonus for me. I’ve been at this same mid level firm for 9 years and it’s all I know. Is this normal??

Advice requested: When you were a legal intern or a summer, what type of projects did you like best? What was most helpful to you when you received a new assignment? Anything you wish your mentor did/didn’t do? I’m working with my first ever intern and trying to structure projects so they know that the work is important and relevant to the business, and why, and to provide enough background info on the area of law so they don’t spin wheels on the basics. What else should I be doing?

So stuck. What do I do? I joined this firm a year ago (4 yrs exp total) to grow/get more court/client exposure. Then 2 more-experienced associates were hired, pandemic, & all cases are divided between the other 2. I have no defined tasks except deficiency letters or the odd pro bono case. Boss claims it's mentoring. I still need to meet bill req.

Last wk Boss said I'll do more & my work was good, but today said I can't 2nd chair bc I don't have experience. I'm doing less now than my prior firm.
