I started in tax and now I’m in digital strategy. You really need to leave now though because once you make manager you’ll be making too much money to be taking a step back. Of course, you could do it that way, but it’s actually quite difficult with life and shit.
Depending on what you wanna do, some of your skills may not translate. Like if you want to go into corporate strategy or product management, everything you’ve learned in tax is somewhat relevant unless you’ve been managing engagement teams, but you’re a senior so it’s highly unlikely.
You’ll need to take a step back and become an associate or a staff again depending on what you’re looking for.
I’m happy to provide some guidance because it was a difficult transition for me, but it ended up working out in the long run and I make a lot more money

Use recruiters, just apply to postings, leverage your network, and practice how to explain how your experience translates.
Expected in this job market. Prepare to do 100's of applications for the next 6 months +
Find an operations role within tax, get project management experience, use that experience and apply to other operation jobs
thank you!!
Interesting, I’m in tax as well. Look at it from the bright side, this might be one of the few sectors of PA where you can learn the skills to run your own tax accounting practice. I don’t feel like audit gets the same rep. Best of luck!
🙄
What level are you? It’s harder the more experienced you are
i’ve never interviewed and not gotten an offer, so it’s not my interview skills. it’s just impossible to actually get an interview
Just know so many other roles out there besides tax
Tax compliance Didn’t finish this statement but go into more advisory
Life in tax is hard but you can either grind it out now and be your own boss later or be an employee forever.
Also, I started at PwC AWM and hated it. Now I actually enjoy working on individual/private clients. Maybe it’s time to switch into a different group.
Dm for a referral in private.
Be ready to take pay cut. Look for entry level opportunities in an audit practice. Build from the ground up there. Learn new skills and get your CPA if you don’t have it already. If still not happy in audit, then jump to consulting or an industry accounting role would be much more attainable after few years in PA audit.
Depends on what area of tax you’re in but generally speaking it’s hard to get out of tax but doable
