How to handle politics with your own father who is wildly right and you are simply a moderate? My dad is not open in any capacity to anything besides fox. He’s a smart guy so it makes me sad that he’s so close minded about this. I want to be kind and respectful but the man doesn’t even consider other views or opinions.

Fight. I’ve been fighting my racist parents for years and I don’t plan to stop letting them know that other people deserve basic human decency

Avoid the topic... people have different opinions about politics all the time. It sounds like he might be set in his ways and likes to talk about it constantly. Think of it like him nudging you and asking you if you’re going to have kids soon or basically anything else that old people hyperfocus on. either tell him you don’t wanna talk about it or if that doesn’t work dont engage.

This is great advice thank you!

He’s racist, give up on him. All love and comfort you offer him makes you complicit in your legacy of white supremacy.

What about Biden? You must also be a racist if you support him so...

I have clashed with my old man for two decades, particularly in the case of religion - he is a fundamentalist evangelical and I am an atheist. What I have learned is to find other topics to discuss, which in your case is more difficult given the election year. But, if you can find a list of topics to discuss then you can push through the rest of this election cycle. If that fails, which it will from time to time, then the key phrase I often use when we disagree or go down the forbidden convo is to remind him and me that what I am/he is saying is what’s right for me/him. And that’s okay. I find we can always end on respecting each other rather than trying to convert one another or defend one’s positions.

I suggest reading A Righteous Mind which explores why different people tend towards different political leanings and why they think the way they do. When you can tailor discussions using the right's reasoning you might have more success and understanding

In his defense, he probably considers himself a moderate and you a crazy leftist

https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/how-to-convince-someone-when-facts-fail/ Michael Shermer provides a succinct summary of the challenge in resolving for cognitive dissonance and provides some good rules of engagement to follow here.

Don’t engage in those discussion with him. I’m left and my dad is conservative right. We don’t talk politics because it causes a rift. We agree to disagree and leave it there because at the end of the day that my Dad and I love and respect him, even if his views don’t align with mine (unfortunately). Before he tries to start and political convos I always tell him I’m not going down that road with him and he’s gotten the message.

My dad too. And my father in law. Is it all dads?

Need some help (!!) from the women who work in tech in this bowl. The company I work for has a parental leave policy that is only 2 weeks paid leave (pretty sad..) I am proposing we update this to be more competitive. I need other companies that are: 1. US policies 2. Funding under 200 million (not big tech)If anyone is aware of policies that would be helpful in my argument please message me or drop a comment below with: 1. Name of start-up 2. Amount of current funding 3. Parental leave policy.
