How to keep from having to be everyone’s babysitter and/or administrative biotch? 🙃 Wishing we had more accountability and resourcefulness in our company culture. Can anyone relate?

That’s all my job is. My company has this culture of asking people to “bump up” emails in their inbox and resend links/creative already sent. Literally shit they can do by scrolling up and down on their own

likefunny

😂💯

like

Don’t do it. That’s the only way! Once you do it they expect it. 🥴

like

Agree with SPM 1. The people we work with are adults. They are responsible for meeting deadlines they are given and when they do not meet their deadlines, it’s on them. If you have sent information, it is their responsibility to read it.

If you’ve provided links, paths, dates in writing, respond to their repeat request with a request and ask them to search their inbox and/or review the document you shared. If you enable their bad behavior, they will continue to expect the same things from you.

And if your leadership and/or managers don’t see the babysitting dynamic as an issue, I would cut the place loose. They don’t know what PM’s purpose is and haven’t required the respect the role should have from other disciplines — so they’re using you as an admin. That’s not what you are.

like

I set the tone by having a weekly team status meeting, a status doc that they have access to at all times, and project tasks assigned in Workfront. All this for the team to know next steps on every project. At that point they need to take ownership. If they miss the date or dont let me know that they need more time, that is on them. My workload does not allow me to micromanage anyone. It also helps that I discussed this with managers and they support me. It sounds harsh, but took me 20 years to realize it is not my fault if someone misses a date as long as I provided them clear timelines.

like

even if you ARE client facing (i am), missed deadlines is not one person’s fault and if your account team is putting you in the client’s line of fire to answer for that, they’re really shitty account people.

like

Unfortunately, its your job to keep the project on track and finishing on deadline, some people have to be babysat

likesmart

MPM1, it’s *their* job to do the work on time and per the brief. We’re all adults. We don’t need babysitting. I’m genuinely concerned that of this is how you boil down your job that you’re not quite well versed as to how your function fits in the larger picture.

like

I’m feeling this now. I make the joke, hey I’m a Sr PM, not a Executive assistant right? I don’t need to be scheduling meetings for others, they’re adults too lol. And I don’t need to sit in on every meeting lol.

like

Completely agree, if I don't have to be in the meeting then there is no reason I should have to schedule it. Occasionally I have as one offs to help support my team if I know someone is slammed, but definitely don't want to set the precedent that you should own all meeting invites that a very outdated idea in my opinion

like

If you’re a junior PM to some degree you’re expected to follow up once in a while and do a little managing up. But if these are consistent patterns and there are specific people that you have to keep doing that for (especially other junior staff) then you should flag it for your senior PM.

As a senior PM I’m comfortable reminding all the staff on my projects that I’m not their babysitter and they’re accountable for meeting their own deadlines (which I’ve outlined in advance). If they are unable to consistently, they become a risk I flag for leads - not a child I babysit. It’s a reframe.

like

What’s your official position? In my experience PMs keep the project organized and on time. Sometimes that means being an admin. and a bit of keeping the team on track

🥲 I feel this. I work in a creative environment and I think this happens often because creatives will see PMs as their source for administrative guidance- leaving them to focus on the creativity

I’m constantly saying to new team workers, that one day they’ll be on their own. It usually takes month or so.

Try setting up a retrospective. Sometimes pointing out what isn’t going well and setting a plan to how to improve can be helpful.

Is it important to offer support staff that speak a foreign language or is it sufficient if the attorney can communicate with the client? We had one bilingual paralegal and another who is not. The bilingual one left us some time ago.

Thus, we are left with one who can’t communicate with about 25% of our clients. And there just isn’t enough revenue to support two paralegals despite my partner pushing us to hire.
