How to negotiate an offer? I never negotiated before and this is my second job out of college. How to best increase both base and RSUs? TIA

1) negotiate from a position of strength. Easiest way to negotiate is to be comfortable where you are at + entertaining multiple offers. If that isn’t you, act like it is when talking with the recruiter, use online comparisons to benchmark, etc. 2) state your ask, and then follow up with an email. Email follow-up makes sure that what you’re asking for is documented (and can be shared easily to the hiring manager for review), best to first mention the ask over phone/in person because it reminds them that this is a human conversation, not just numbers. Unless you’re trying to match a better offer, I’d recommend figuring out your “target” increase and double that for your ask. people love “meet me in the middle” counteroffers (like if your offer is for $100k TC and you want $110k, ask for $120k, recruiter’s counter is probably going to be $110k). 3) don’t negotiate against yourself. If/when the recruiter comes back and says that your offer is unreasonable, and asks what number you’d actually be happy with, keep them anchored to the higher number and stall (“my target is $120k, the closer you can get to that, the more likely we get a chance to work together”) Also know what your alternatives are. The worst case scenario is going to be “sorry, this is the best we can do”, in which case you can sign, push one more time on other intangibles (start date, PTO), ask for a one-time signing bonus, or reject the offer. (Also also hot take, if a company ever rescinds an offer in a good-faith negotiation, that’s a major red flag and you dodged a bullet by not going with that company.

That’s wonderful! Well done EY1.

I'm about to negotiate as well so it would be good to know. Someone else I know going to the same FAANG literally just asked for more without giving any good reason and got $10k more in base.

IMO there’s always more money on the table. Personally this is how I like to approach it - before the convo do quick calculations on what the expected offer, your counter offer, and various possible compromises. This way you won’t be caught off guard - thank them for their offer, reiterate interest on the position - “I am looking for XXX TC. I don’t think we are too far off and would love to make this work. Can you come up to XXX base and XXX RSUs?” - Most likely they’ll follow up with their counter offline or in a next call. - if they aren’t able to come up as much as you want, negotiate for a sign on bonus or more PTO - be direct and confident. No need to explain your rationale for wanting more. If they ask simply say you feel that is fair given compensation conversations you’ve been having for similar opportunities

40k more annually or 40k more on RSUs (assuming 4 year vesting)? The former feels unlikely given your YOE. The latter I feel like you could make happen.

Thoughts on finding an easy-part time remote job (May or may not be relevant to my career) for a year and living abroad? How hard would it be to come back and pickup on your career?

Has anyone else found HR timelines to be a crawl during all of this year? Top 5 bank or smaller bank, it’s totally glacial pace, it doesn’t matter. I try to normally be engaged and quick with stuff client side or internal stuff but it truly blows my mind how slow HR is on things. Like if I was to be this slow client side, I’d be fired. Does anyone have similar experiences over the past year?

Is wlb for consulting in UK (London) better than that in US? Trying to convince myself that the pay parity is worth it. Also, could you please help me understand whether the total long term col (inc healthcare, childcare etc) in London is less than that in a hcol US city (say NYC), and thus the saving potential is similar? TIA!
