How to set boundaries at work?

Shut your laptop after you’ve put in a good day. Don’t respond to emails or work outreach when you aren’t prepared to work or during off hours unless it’s an absolute emergency (which is never). Set appropriate expectations if asked (“I’ll get on it tomorrow/Monday”, “I won’t be near my laptop tonight/this weekend”). Don’t sleep with people on your team.

Say no to additional work when you’re already busy

No is a full sentence. And we aren’t saving lives here, know when to “ignore” a late night / weekend message and when one needs to be addressed.

I’ve been in an in-house role since the beginning of the year and just gave 2 weeks’ notice to leave for a much better paying and better titled position. The response has been very petty, to the point that I’ve been called unprofessional even after I asked the hiring attorney whether I could give longer notice at the current company’s request. Is this normal?

Clients always right! Especially when you’re wrong.

I just listened to an interview of a creative director recount their path towards copywriting at a famous ad agency. It could not have been a more textbook case of failing upwards as a white man.

It would seem the only thing you need to make it as an advertising creative is to have lots of not particularly original ideas. Practically every other skill is unnecessary. If you’re a white man.

That this level of mediocrity passes for talent explains why so many agency briefs are so lame.
