Maybe phrase it as like “hey I’d love to have a job like yours one day, would you mind talking to me about your career path when you have some free time?” They’re not going to miss the hint that you’d like to work at their company and will probably be happy to talk about themselves and give you some tips and keep you in mind for positions they hear about even if not at their company.

Do this soon after a deal closes or something so it doesn’t seem like you’re distracted from their work.

Thanks, this is helpful.

If a job at their company pops up, reach out and tell them you are interested if they think you might be a good fit. Use LinkedIn, not your firm email. I’ve been moved to the top of the list that way in the past.

What’s your timeline? It’s not realistic right now, but if you have a good relationship, letting up for drinks, dinner, or lunch with no pretense is probably a good first move.

Correct. That’s what I came here to get advice on. How to do this discreetly and professionally. As in, how to appropriately word the email/telephone call.

Hi All, I was offered a role with Aecoms San Francisco office working with an energy client for a midlevel associate environmental planner. I wanted to gauge what is a general salary that ones been offered on this team. I felt lowballed at $79k/annual, initially offered 74k. This is given that I had 1.5 years in land use planning and a recent masters graduate in urban planning.

Any suggestions? Referrals to a company open to training? Suggestions on certifications? Any advice is really appreciated.

Having anxiety. I started at a new firm recently. I’m on east coast time and my colleagues are on west coast time. The deal was relatively quiet up until 10 pm PT. I turned in my portion and asked my senior if I could be of any help or if I was okay to sign off for the evening (1am ET). Was this a mistake? Did I make a bad impression by asking if I could log off? I was clear that I was ready and available if there were tasks I could help with.

Can personality make up for work product? I’ve worked on two matters with a first year that multiple partners have referred to as a “superstar.” Their work was just fine on both matters and downright wrong on certain issues/points. I’ve definitely been more impressed by other first years in this class. However, this first year is incredibly outgoing and some would probably consider them “charming” (comes across as a borderline sociopath imo). Could that be why partners think so highly of them?

Urgent since I have to make a decision by today. I have two offers: one is general real estate (a variety of work) and the other is focused on real estate finance.
