Was it his decision to end it because of distance? If so, you might need to consider not traveling is possible and you feel it's worth the investment.

So much of this depends on the guy, but assuming you are the one that broke it off and he has a prototypical fragile male ego, when you reach out you need to put yourself out there in a vulnerable position with no expectation of him accepting/rejecting. If he engages then follow with your case for why you were wrong and what's different now.
