Why tf would you want to go up when you could go out
Depends on the level. For what it's worth, I was on bench at Deloitte for 4 months (straight out of college) during one point and no one batted an eyelid. Even got a 11% raise that year lol.
Align yourself with the right partner. Clout comes before merit when it comes to promotion at consulting firms
Deloitte isn’t. We’re a body shop
Can't speak for EY, but Deloitte is moderately up or out on the core PPMD track. You're given a reasonable runway at each level to show your readiness for the next level, but you're not going to, say, stay a C for 6 years without getting the axe unless you switch from the core PPMD track to the project delivery track. I believe the specialist track has a longer runway at each level than the PPMD track, but it still has limits; project delivery is the only one that doesn't have limits, though it has challenges of its own.
It's been a while since I was at D, so any folks still there feel free to correct me if I missed anything.
More like up AND out 😂
Both up or out are good options?
EY is only up or out once you get to Partner, certainly not as intense as MBB
PwC is down and in.
EY doesn’t have much of an up or out policy. With that said, during the Covid downturn, some SMs realized partner wasn’t a viable route for them or not important to them so they left. Partners were the first to go when we lost business.
I have been a senior for almost 3 years (out of MBA) and I could see myself being promoted this year, next year, or even the year after. I don’t think there is any real pressure to leave if I don’t make it, with that said I have an ego like everyone else and wants grow and progress.
It's completely different depending on service line. If you're in a low-growth part of the business, if you're not going up you should be looking out. If you're in advisory you should stick around, if the business is growing leadership will need to grow along with it.
