How was your mental health before advertising?

Clearly unstable since I made the choice to go into advertising.

I think the better question is- why do we get so strung out on shit that the majority of the world’s population hates? There was a Jr in a different thread wondering how he could become a ‘legendary copywriter” and I felt sad for him because it’s literally just advertising- digital ephemera that will be forgotten tomorrow. Even the good stuff that occasionally gets past the client and out into the world isn’t exactly paradigm shifting. It’s more like a simplified derivative of a cultural trend. And there’s nothing too terribly wrong about that, but I think we’d all be a lot happier if we recognized our actual place in the cultural totem pole. Or maybe we have and that’s why we have to give ourselves lots of awards and ridiculous trophies- to ease our shame and embarrassment over how we hawk other people’s shit.

Ya same ☝️ maybe this industry is not the cause, just a symptom of our collective conditions.

Better. I floundered for years in the service industry after college working weekends and holidays, so this shit is the bees knees to me. Sure, it can be stressful (often), but at the end of the day, most jobs are to some degree - at least any job that’s remotely interesting to my knowledge. This is the only industry I can think of that lets me be so goofy, hang out with other smart, interesting people, and get paid decently. And I’m the only one I know who’s office is closed for two weeks during the holidays.

Ya might be onto something here

Way worse, actually

Once I love what I do, I’m better then ever. I would advice you guys to find something that you love to do. To work in something you hate is the biggest reason for your mental instability

like

Before? Much worse. Going to work all day gives me a sense of purpose, social activity, and temporary respite from being a depressed slug.

I once had a therapist ask me, “with your anxiety and the stress caused by your job, are you sure advertising is the right job for you?” I told him probably not. That was 10 years ago.

like

It was worse. Mostly because of anxiety and lack of confidence, that years of stupid office bullying bullshit and other hideous encounters has now transformed me into a person that doesn’t take shit from people lightly, nor care about it. So, thumbs up advertising?

like

No idea, cause it’s been too long since I got in the game. But I’ve always been nuts so I’m prob not the best person to answer this!

Better. Worked in retail for ten years prior to making a massive career shift. This is much more up my alley, even if the basis of it (advertising) is so ludicrous to me at times. It’s remembering that that keeps me centered and I don’t let myself get stressed.... because we’re not saving lives

Much worse because I hated my job. Now I love it

How do you repeatedly turn down work for one partner or effectively avoid working with a particular person within your firm? Assuming hours are met and your standing is strong otherwise. Do all therapists use the line, “I’m not taking any new patients at this time.” When they don’t want to see someone?! I found someone who would be perfect and got that line. I need out of M&A. I like the people, I like the work, I even like most of the clients, but my health can’t take the fire drills. Currently on on a day where I literally got back from A&E and I’m probably going to work overnight on a closing (and no, it’s neither the partners’ nor clients’ fault, this is government dictated). We have resource but nobody with enough deal knowledge so it’s two people trying to get everything out while two first years wait on our instructions but can’t do much.

Anyone feel like they are conditioned to always try harder, do better, etc? I'm having such a hard time dialing it back (I want to do this for my own mental health). I want to be okay with just being average, but it's like I'm working against myself...I don't know if it's just a consulting thing, but it's taking A LOT of effort, and I hate feeling like I'm letting ppl down, but ppl let me down all the time lol.
