How would you rank the following NYC agencies? Which of these would you recommend for interning at: 360i Edelman Grey Joan Ogilvy R/GA Saatchi TBWA Chiat Day Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Avoid places that assign you an “intern project” that’s not real work. I’d maybe shoot for smaller places that do cool stuff. You’re more likely to be treated like a junior there and learn more. If I were looking, I’d reach out to small places run by awesome people like Interesting Development or Lightning Orchard and see if they’d take me on as an intern.

That is an odd collection agencies there.

I semi-recently finished an internship at Saatchi. You don’t want to intern at Saatchi.

TBWA\Chiat\Day if you like backslashes. R/GA if forward slashes are more your thing. Seriously though, get in where it feels like a fit. If you interview and... the culture feels right, you’ll be excited and maybe a little nervous about going into work everyday, and you know you’ll have a mentor or manager that will be generous with their knowledge... go there. The agency world is small enough, networking opportunities will open up from there!

For an internship? All of the above. Apply everywhere. Also do a deep dive into your top five and see who is doing the work you’d like to do.

You (hopefully) only have to work for free once. Might as well shoot for the stars. Wieden and Kennedy. If you can’t do that, go for a small place with talented, kind people who can mentor you not just use you to swab the decks.

I would talk to people who’ve recently been interns at these agencies vs. people with more tenure. The intern experience can vary vastly depending on where you are. I’d look for places that give interns real briefs, on exciting assignments. Also that will put interns on new business pitches where you can learn a lot very quickly.

Interning is very different than working. A lot of these places have bad reps for various reasons but really you’re just visiting and getting a good name on your resume. I’ve worked at various agencies with intern programs that really didn’t depict real agency life. If you’re lucky to get intel on any one you’re better off basing a decision on that but that seems harder to get. Apply to all of them. Try to identify good mentor(s) when you get there even if they’re not part of the program.

Thank you for that insightful contribution, VP1. I’m sure it’ll help OP make a better informed decision with regards to their internship.

1. TBWA\Chiat\Day, clearly first place. 2. Grey, Ogilvy (tied for number 2). 3. Saatchi (knocked down a notch because they’re under Publicis Groupe, otherwise on par with the others in the number 2 slot). 4. R/GA (they’d normally be further down but a kid tattooed their logo on his face, which oddly helped their image). 5. 360i (digital agency. Ok but not going to turn heads on a resume as much as the ones above it). 6. Joan (small, so-so). 7. Edelman (not impressive enough).

Agree with the other commenters, these may all be good options, just depends on what you’re looking for. Some internships may be a more impressive creative name, but you’re not given real work and won’t establish meaningful connections. Others may not have the same agency name cache but will put you on actual client projects and treat you as part of the team. Talk to former interns for the best take.

For an unpaid, you-pay-to-do-it internship with Miami Ad School, I’d recommend: Joan R/GA Saatchi Grey TBWA Ogilvy 360i Remember that the more people in your cohort, the harder it is for you to shine.

If you’ve three internships, throw a dice. Two? Go for the ones at both ends. Just one? Go for the middle of the pack, you’ll learn a lot from there.

If you go anywhere but the NY school. You only get one unless you transfer to another location.
