How’s everyone’s work-life balance? Do you think your field has it particularly tough in that regard?

I won't put up with a bad work life balance. If a person can't get it done in 40hrs (40 not messing around hours), it is a job for more than one person. Salary isn't an excuse to have discounted labor, no one should be giving a company 60 hours work for 40 hours of pay just because there is that much work to do. Bottom line, a company should plan around 40 hours per worker. If they can't make that work financially, they don't have a viable business and should close up shop.

I once interviewed for a company looking for an ME with 5-7 years experience, they expected 55 hours per week + optional (but it was really mandatory) 2 Saturdays a month. $50k/yr starting salary, back in 2015.

I should note, that is for salary. If you need people to do 50hrs and they are on hourly, fair deal.

I just left my job because my work life balance was awful. I guess it depends the industry you go into.

Pretty good. In industrial engineering a set schedule is key. Quality- of-life is another important metric

I am a petroleum engineer and I work in the field, I have guards from 3 to 6 months in the field, I return to land for 1 or 2 months and then I return to the field, what do you think?

I work as an aerospace engineer in the development part, I don't have much time and my life is full of many secrets, many of the things I do I can't even talk about with my wife, so it's not very easy to explain that my work days extend for days sometimes.

Well, since I ingest chemicals, I work for a cleaning products company in the quality control part, my schedule is maintained, that is, it does not change over time and that allows me to enjoy my family.

I dedicate myself to automotive mechanics and of course, I am a mechanical engineer like my father was, some days I can leave earlier than others but I always have time to live, and if I don't have it, I invent it, after all, we are engineers, right?

Hello, excellent question but I have to answer in the negative in my case, I am a field engineer and I don't have time for myself, I only have time to work, so I planned a path in which I work for a long time to generate enough money and set up my own company, I know it will take me even more time but it will be my thing.

As a project engineers, we are in each part of the project, supervising and helping, which demands a lot of life time, because not only do you make the map, but you also have to go through it to avoid errors, so in short, I don't have time for anything else, at least I currently have no family.

Hi all! What are the differences between senior/staff SWE and software architects? Are architects still a thing? I'm causally searching for a new position (my job had a 50% layoff last month and the survivability of the company is sketchy) and I've noticed senior and staff SWE roles sound like they have a lot of architectural designing and leadership responsibilities while not focusing on coding as much. Is this normal? I love mentoring, but I also don't wanna be in meetings all day. 😕

So is it just us on this bowl. Totally fine if it is. This evening we had a rose. It’s from sojourn, one of my favorite boutique wineries. They had a promotion where a case was 30% off so I had to do it. After discount but plus tax was $26 a bottle which is expensive for a rose in general but for a Rose of Pinot noir was a good price. Paired it with Dover sole dusted in flour and fried in butter. Made a reduction with the rose, capers and lemon juice end up bit salty but was ok since we had wine

I've noticed that my coworkers tend to work more on their own than with others, even when they're all in the office. Is this normal? My current employer has a not great work/life balance but it’s much easier to get promoted. I work at an manufacturing company as a technician. My job title is a technician but they use me as an engineer as-well. There are three techs overall in the company. My boss who hired me understands what my degree is in so he uses me to design parts and write reports. The plant manager doesn’t know my skills so anytime I’m in the office working he calls me to the floor to do something the other techs can do. Should I have a talk with the boss about it? (I ran out of characters)
