I had my first technical round of interview as Sr. Android developer with Tech Mahindra and It went well. How long does it take to know about the result. Also how many rounds are there? The interviewer refused to say his name nor he appeared on video in the interview. Is that the company policy? Tech Mahindra

I answer questions about the specific range for our positions every day. It should in no way be off putting. Typically, my response goes something like this, “Specific pay is based on individual qualifications such as years of experience, education, certs, etc.” if I have the specific range available, I immediately follow up that statement with, “With that in mind, the range for this position would be $X to $Y.”
I ALWAYS leave my self some wiggle room on the top end because our roles are extremely technical and skilled and it leaves room for negotiations. Since we are a contractor, we don’t often have very much flexibility.
In regards to what I like to hear from candidates, I want their honesty in what minimum they are seeking. If a candidate accepts a position from us and it’s $10k less than what they really wanted, there is a good chance they will leave the first opportunity they get for a position that is in the range they really wanted. I am as open and honest about salary as I possibly can be and it’s nice to get the same from them.
I think I bring limited perspective to this as a 3rd party/outside recruiter. But I’m secretly delighted when candidates ask me, as an answer to that question, “what is the budget for the role?” I think it generally benefits the candidate to never answer that question.
Ideally, the candidate would respond with their salary expectations. :) Many companies don’t share their ranges/budgets, so the best response would be to give an honest answer and see how the recruiter reacts.
I believe TAS1 is referring to California's Equal Pay Act.

27. Is an employer required to provide the pay scale for an open position to an applicant for that position?
Pursuant to Labor Code section 432.3, upon reasonable request, an employer shall provide the pay scale for a position to an applicant applying for employment. Recent amendments define a reasonable request as one made after an applicant has completed an initial interview with the employer.

As a job seeker, the conversational answer with a salary range makes sense. I'm seeing many applications ask for salary requirements. I'm looking to support a different industry that also has different salary levels. Thoughts on how to answer the desired salary question on an application when one really wants to make a move? A range isn't always possible in the application format.
