HR just told me I have a week to get vaccinated or leave the firm. Any amlaw firms say vaccination is optional? Is there a thread for which firms allow attorneys in the office without vaccination?

I'm sorry to hear this OP. And I'm also very disappointed to see the amount of "😂" emojis and other hateful comments. Sincerely, I am. I personally cannot imagine working for a place that doesn't believe in medical freedom of choice or informed consent. You worked hard for your career and I'm sorry that your employer is attempting to coerce you into this personal decision. I can't imagine having my livelihood threatened over this decision.

Especially given the fact that the vaccines clearly are not preventing the transmission or spread at this point. Some firms have even required boosters, and they're now recommending a 4th booster, at what point can we have the freedom to make our own decisions back? All of you laughing are just down for a lifelong subscription to big pharma or facing a loss of your livelihood?

That said, I know at least Kirkland allows their associates the freedom of choice. I'm sure there are others. It's a very hot lateral market, I'm confident you can find a firm that will respect your decision and value you as an individual.

KE2 many of the holiday parties were cancelled, and the offices shut down because of general NYC / Chi cases not because of KE cases.

As someone who is fully vaccinated: stop being sheeple, we’re all attorneys, stop getting wrapped up into politics. Until the law mandates vaccinates, you don’t have to get one. You may have the right to compensation/recovery for potential wrongful termination. Who knows at this point. Anyone have a clearcut argument based on stare decisis for our current situation? Please, do let us know.

I have a published law review article relating to potential immunities and exceptions from liability for these Big Pharma companies (and a plethora of other companies—non-pharma). If someone doesn’t want to get the vaccination, don’t belittle them. What does the current statutory and case law state?

I chose to get vaccinated but I don’t give two sh*ts what others choose to do. Trust me when I say that if these vaccines have negative longterm effects, the pharma companies will have solid arguments which will likely protect them from ANY liability.

A3, didn’t realize being berated anonymously online is equivalent to relinquishing all privileges to participate in society… You really took that from zero to 100 real quick

Lol, I fully support the firm. You have no right to put other people at risk.

Oh look, offensive Holocaust comparisons! We had to get here eventually.

It bothers me that there are people in our profession so uniformed that they would quit their job rather than get a vaccine that helps prevent countless deaths. I know you don’t want criticism but you really can’t be given a free pass on this. I’m glad you won’t be coming to my firm.

A16 I'm pretty sure that term doesn't mean what you think it means, because not only is this an informed take but the information is readily accessible in this very thread so the opportunity cost of education is extremely low.

On the other hand, people taking an anti-vax stance (with the possible exception of the person experiencing long-term effects from the first dose) are either willfully ignorant or are so ensconced in partisan misinformation that they're incapable of seeing truth.

The reasonable people in my circles are actually pretty much done with masks precisely because they are vaccinated. Only exception is maybe if you’re around someone who very clearly wants you to mask and then it’s just done out of kindness rather than any actual safety concern.

Just to build on my last post, I'm in a red state where covid mandates are effectively banned. My employer asked me to get vaccinated and I told them no on state law grounds and they backed off. I also work remotely so they probably think it's not worth it to press. The policy is kind of silly in any case because very few firms are requiring boosters, and I'm not sure theres much difference between someone who's not vaxxed and someone who was vaxxed last January 2021

Being exempt from the mandate is only one perk. Pretty much no one down here gives two shits about covid. last time I went to a blue city people were casually talking about virus strains and what masks are better to use and which brand of vax they got. That kind of mental illness is just sad. The tax situation and weather down here aren't bad either.

The extent to which it is not “affecting your life” is due to others being responsible.

In other words, you’re a freeloader. And apparently proud of it.

Folks, stop making this about your politics, or how “dumb” I must be. I just want a list of firms to look into. Thx

No self respecting firm that cares about their employees will/ should hire you. So if and when you find one that will please share with the rest of us so the non anti-vaxxers amongst us can choose where not to go. Also try Jones day they probably are your best bet

Please just get vaccinated.

Good luck. For what it’s worth, when interviewing, I declined interviews for firms that mandated vaccination. I am vaccinated but that was my choice. I wouldn’t feel ok to be forced into it.

I have a medical exemption and I’m just here to say that my experience has been living hell at my firm. I’m sorry OP that you experienced negative side effects from your first shot and I hope you’re able to find a firm that values you and won’t treat you like a second class citizen.

like

Regardless of opinions re: vaccination, I think OP should start looking elsewhere. If the firm really values you as someone they want to keep, they would have come up with exceptions (medical, etc) or have given you 100% remote arrangement, etc just so they could keep you. But they are not bothering to do that.

like

Paul Hastings requires full vaccination even for full time remote workers just FYI out there

likeuplifting

OP, just find a fully remote firm where you can work from Florida or Texas.

Does the employer permit medical exemptions? HR would typically allow this to avoid any potential liabilities. Fortunately I was not forced to get vaxxed but I would also be open to just complying with their policy if the employer assumed liability for any potential side effects or medical expenses. Many young people are experiencing unique and unknown side effects.

likefunny

OP woke up today and chose violence.

ETA: we know how most lawyers feel about the vaccine, it’s why most states added attorneys to the priority list for the vaccine even though the majority of us were working from home.

like

It technically was “workers supporting the operation of the judicial system” or something like that, which included certain lawyers and judges.

Can yal please stop posting for OP to just please get vaccinated. We’re all adults and OP mentioned the hesitation for getting the second shot was because of the side effects they are still dealing with from the first shot.

likefunnyhelpful

People can, but probably will not.

Are you ok doing weekly covid tests? I think king & spalding offers that as an alternative to vaccination.

like

Pay cut - but when I left Stoel Rives, they were allowing weekly tests.

Can someone please show where it’s confirmed that the vaccines prevent the spread of COVID? I see on the CDC site that some studies “suggest” they “may”, but nothing conclusive. In contrast, the studies do confirm that vaccine prevent symptoms, hospitalization, etc. I’m concerned about the different language used.

like

Vaccines prevented the spread of COVID with other variants, but not as effectively as omicron. Since your question seems to be genuine and not looking for an argument, i took the time to look up the link to this study in the New England Journal of Medicine which found that while viral loads are similar among vaccinated and unvaccinated people initially, those viral loads drop off much more quickly in people who are vaccinated. So while it is true that vaccinated people can spread COVID-19, the period that they are contagious is typically much shorter than unvaccinated people. This data was mostly about Delta, but I expect the data will show similar trends for people who are boosted with respect to Omicron.
