If you have the means to do it, take the time off before starting. You will work the rest of your life. If you need to start earlier for financial reasons, they’ll be fine with that also. Just look out for yourself as the first priority. In the end a few months doesn’t matter in a 40 year career.

I agree with you wholeheartedly; if I got to choose between a Sept start or a Jan start I would definitely choose the later!

If you are with a big firm, just tell them you might accelerate your grad date and would like to keep your start date where it is. You may find adding the extra class takes away time to study for the CPA exam and you'll need to study in the fall. If you can pass before you start full time you will be in a great position. If you are with a smaller firm, you could consider offering to start early part time. We do that with people in your situation and it works well for them and the firm. Whatever the choice, just be honest. You will find that most people are going to encourage you to take the break where you can, as that opportunity will not come again often in your 35 year career.

I appreciate the insight; the firm is Deloitte do I believe they would want me to start as soon as there is availability (ie: they don't have a full pipeline for the group). I will definitely take the fall off if it is possible, and hit the ground running next year!

What is stopping you from graduating in August, still starting work in December, and taking the time off and working on your cpa in the meantime? I graduated in September and started in January.

Well nothing per-say, but I wanted to be upfront about my graduation date. It could impact me in the exit interview (not a negation of offer necessarily), because they may change my start date accordingly. To be clear, I do not mind an early start date as my family is not working at the moment and I wouldn't mind earning something. I wouldn't mind a vacation either, but I am going to finish my CPA before the fall anyway so that isn't a reason to delay.

I have told the recruiters a different graduation date then my actual due to credit transfer issues for my grad school. I was actually able to start while still needing two classes. I beleive for grad school it's different then undergrad.

Wow that is excellent to hear! The firm is Deloitte actually so I hope to receive similar treatment, thanks for your comment.

Up my graduation date, as I would only take ONE class in the fall if I graduate in Dec (plus pay more fees for another semester). Is this something that is frowned upon HR-wise? I heard from a mentor of mine (ex-b4) that the firm's are more loose with grad interns and do things like start them right after their internship sometimes (vs the regular junior internship a year out from full-time). Any insight/ anecdotes appreciated, as I can still graduate in December if it is required!

Just let them know and be honest about what you want aka when you want to start. At least for PwC, start dates are determined later than you’d think. If anything it’s a good look that you finished earlier rather than later so I see no potential pushback from them.

Apologies if this is a silly question - New analyst here and trying to get a handle on my finances and retirement portfolio. I’m familiar with the rough sequence of saving being: 3-6 months HYSA, Company match 401k, Roth IRA, HSA, 401k max, personal brokerage (Pls correct me if i’m incorrect here). My question is: Are you expected to invest as much money as you can into each step before proceeding to the next, or do you allocate a portion of your paycheck to each of these steps simultaneously?
