HR vent of the day - New president of the company wrote a policy without my knowledge and released it to the employees. The policy basically says that they shall not park within a specific area due to construction but should park in 2 other lots (there a 4 lots total). I get a message this morning to write up DAs for people parked in the 4th lot that was not discussed in the policy. I refused because the policy was vague and really open ended. Apparently I’m playing word games and nit picky. 🤦‍♀️

Amazing the energy that is used to either bring down morale or uplift it.

All I can say is may the odds be ever in your favour because if he is spending time on that as the President of the organization he clearly doesn’t have a clue where he should be spending his time. Yikes!

likefunny

While you’re drafting the write up memos, make a copy that can be used for employees that don’t park properly within the four lines of the box.

Like, bc you know that one is coming next quarter..

I’m curious how you plan to handle this? I would have a hard time dealing with a president that doesn’t recognize the value in HR and the legal ramifications of enforcing vague policies.

like

Wow… I create all of my company’s policies and just released a national handbook with state specific addendums and I consulted with our attorney on everything. He must not realize the legal consequences of releasing policies without looking at every angle. It’s rough you have to put up with that for now, but it will be a huge wake up call when a settlement hits his bottom line. Hopefully he will start consulting with you after that.

Geez - let’s add leniency in the transition period to your list. We all know behaviour changes are instant right? Passively communicate to people half of your expectations, one time and it will magically happen 🤦‍♀️

Just gotta laugh at folks sometimes. Maybe this will be a food reminder for them to include you going forward?

At risk of sounding disrespectful, this shouldn’t matter. Too many other things we are trying to navigate right now—talent related, mixed economic signals, geopolitical risks, changing in buying journeys that significantly impact revenue growth and sales success.

Make room for the construction people. Put it down. Have one less thing to stress about 🧘‍♀️🕊️✌️😌

Just tow their car and charge them a $200 admin fee each day. Make them navigate a pond with alligators and sharks to move their car. If it were me, I’d refer all complaints about the policy directly to the source of the problem for clarification. That way it won’t happen again.

I haven't encountered a president like this. He/she should have informed you. This is very disrespectful not only to you but to the entire HR dept.

I posted something a couple of days ago in reference to my boss, CFO, not following policies and HR having to run things by him we shouldn’t have to before proceeding. Looks like I’m not the only one with these challenges. And you are a VP at that. SMH. I don’t have the courage to put my foot down but if you do I suggest speak to the president.

Duh, it's apparently a trend in growing manufacturing. I believe it's a new trend in North America. In my career I've honestly seen this just recently. Specifically if it's manufacturing, they think it's just fine to bypass HR or never keep in loop but when situation hits ,there comes the wake up call.

How large is your company? Just trying to gauge if stuff like this happens only at small companies or if HR in the larger companies have similar challenges as well.

Omg that is so frustrating. Got to love when they try to do our job for us and then something like this happens.

Your new president seems to want to give Elon a run for his money. How disrespectful of them to not include you in the making of this policy! Let's hope he doesn't drag you down on his probable downfall.

Make sure to forward all questions/concerns/issues to them to deal with so they understand what a poorly planned/worded policy leads to.

This is tragic considering that a poorly worded company policy is detrimental to your role in the company. You are just as important as the president because you keep the status quo in check for him. You are not nit picky because you are only doing your job. I am curious as to how you will handle the situation. Good luck to you

Ohh. That doesn't seem fair. I haven't encountered such situation but I can only imagine how that would go.

Quick question to H1B or greencard holders. Currently I’m getting sponsored by my company. However my supervisor keep asking me to share all my personal documents with him. He is blocking the connection between me and HR, and he told me not to contact HR directly. If HR request any doc, he gets the request and deliver to me. When I need to submit my doc to HR, he brings my doc to HR. Is this normal procedure?? He is so sketchy. He even checks employee’s home address on google road maps..

Any thoughts on the best certifications to get in order to help move forward? I have considered the CCP from World at Work, but it’s fairly pricey to get by the time you wrap up everything. I was looking at both SHRM-CP and SPHR. Everyone that I have spoken to has the SHRM, but that’s also only looking at individuals in a small geographic footprint and within 3-4 different companies. I was hoping to get some thoughts on this from others? Thanks

Hello fellow HR pros! I really need your opinions on HR certifications. I am deciding between PHR and SHRM-cp. I have read just about all there is online comparing the two and can not decide. My heart is telling me PHR, my mother in law (an HRBP) is telling me to go with SHRM, as it’s more widely recognized, more established and a larger network in general. I work for a 350~ company who is growing rapidly through M&A. Passions/interests are compliance, strategic vision, M&A, branding and culture
