Thought of buying an X6 but with 2 kids, X5 felt roomier. I had this X5 for a few years now. I just dropped a few grand on replacing it’s fancy air suspension. The best advice I have is, if you worry about money you may have to spend on a BMW repair, and I say this sincerely, you are not in a financially strong place to own one. The financial savvy decision would be to not buy one.

2.5 years ~40k miles.

I love BMW’s and have owned a 3 series, 5 series and a 7 series. I love the way they drive, but they are truly horribly designed and manufactured cars which break down a lot after 60k miles! Repairs are a nightmare as they are not easy to open and repair etc. My best experience was the 7 series, and my worst was the 3 and 5 series (transmission design flaws which BMW doesn’t own up to). It takes a couple of loose screws in ones head to own and love BMW’s as you will be spending hours troubleshooting issues and making repairs, plus spending thousands at specialist mechanics. Your new best friend will be realoem.com! 🙂

Lease it for 3 years, have the fun of driving a German car for sometime and then settle back for a Toyota Highlander.

The only data you need is comparing oil change prices, brake jobs, new wheels/rims, and basic annual check up costs...

I agree with this

BMWs are great lease vehicles. They are horrible long term daily drivers unless you can turn a wrench and/or replace cooling systems every other year. 😂

With the way they are designed now, that’s not even really an option. The last one I worked on was my 2001 325. Since then, they are more robots than cars. OP - lease! Works nicely for consultants who travel most of the time. (Oh wait)

We have a 2020 X7 50i lease. $30k one time pay for 36 months. $105k MSRP. Leasehackr is a very helpful resource! If you need a good BMW lease broker, let me know and I can get you in contact.

Leased a 2017 X5 - loved it. BMWs are terrific Turned it in 6 months ago. But completely agree with the above comments. Dont buy one. IMO not worth the $$$. If definitely want one - there's some great deals to take over lease on swapalease or lease transfer- that way not locked into long term lease, nor 3-5k down payment/dealer fees and taxes. I drive a 2020 Honda pilot now (fully embraced the dad life) Sure it's not as cool or as quick as my X5 - but it's also 500 bucks less per month (lower insurance) and takes regular gas. Some alternatives: Highlander, Kia Telluride sx (go drive one, its basically a range rover), or jeep grand Cherokee

OP - save your money and headaches - just get a Lexus or Japanese. You will thank me later 🙂

😱 I just purchased a 2018 430i. 9k miles. This thread is making me second guess my purchase.

Had 2 bmw sedans. Not a single problem other than normal wear and tear.

Avoiding adding unnecessary electronics and features will also reduce the need for repair.

Lease it

My family has 3 BMW SUVs, and I can confirm that they are fairly hot or mid compared to most cars I’ve seen (one has required extensive maintenance, the others have been fine). I think most ppl here are right though that they become huge money sinks 8-10 years in and depreciate a lot

OP, if you have that kind of money, go for Tesla Model X.

Volvo XC90 (dad life as well)

Do you have the one that uses the passenger seat as a tv/ottoman/shoe cabinet?
