Husband and I looking to adopt a puppy (he doesn’t travel). Seriously considering outsourcing the potty training step by sending the dog to training camp. Too much? Any experience doing so?

It depends on the breed! I have two dogs out of which one is a puppy that me and my wife trained ourselves. It can be challenging but fun at the same time.

Toilet training isn’t that bad. It took very very little time (on the order of days) to get our pup to not pee inside. Dogs are clean animals and if you crate train (generally recommended) then toilet training is super easy. What gets hard is when they pee because they’re marking. But a training camp won’t fix that either!

Save your money, potty training is easy. It just takes patience.

Potty training is easy to do yourself. However a puppy is like a child so depending on how much time you have to commit and the breed of the dog you might still want training camp for obedience training. Also adopt don't shop:)

Depending on the breed it can take 3-9 days in my experience. I got a basset a year ago and it was the most difficult but she got it. The occasional mistake happens but it’s normally because I wasn’t paying close attention to her signs

My pup was already potty trained by the breeder.

We sent our dog to a trainer when she was a pup for a couple of weeks. It wasn’t just for housebreaking - she learned basic obedience and was socialized to be around kids and other dogs. I think it was money well spent because she came to us very well behaved. I travel but my partner doesn’t and I’m more of a dog person than he is so having the dog fully trained really reduced his stress and my guilt. The trainer went over all the commands and work he had done so we could keep it up at home. As long as your expectation is that it’s a good start but you will still have some work to do yourself to maintain, it’s great!
