Hypothetically, if student loans are forgiven, should some benefits be extended to those who paid off their student loans aggressively or chose public over private institutions?

Yea. Honestly, screw those who made poor life decisions and decided to major in art history. I worked hard and picked a job that allowed me the ability to pay off my loans so I can buy nice things I like. With no student loans debt, people will have more money to burn through causing basic things such as furniture and stuff would go up in price (since the demand would increase). Now I’m being double penalized.

I guess I should mention that this only applies to basic goods. People buy more expensive things as they make more money, so at worst you may see your favorite items sell out faster. The most noticeable change would likely be in rent and home prices. Less people with high amounts of debt means more people getting married, having kids, and moving out. Apartments in desirable parts of town would likely be near max capacity and would price accordingly until gentrification occurred in other parts... Especially with the population shift to metropolitan areas. Same with home prices. In the end it’s good for the economy. Home sales are healthy, people put more money into the economy, GDP rises, and taxes are higher. Also more people would invest for retirement and the markets would reflect it.

Yeaaaa I’ll probably get a nice lawsuit going if they ever forgave student loans. Main reason I went the military route was free college.

Glad we could entertain each other for a brief moment. Since were ending our arguments with a well wishing equivalent to a southerner saying “I’ll pray for you”. Anyway, I’ll pray for you.

Will never happen. Not my fault these people went to fancy expensive schools in giant cities and studied something they can’t make enough to pay their loans back.

Me and my wife put almost all of our savings towards my business school and her masters postponing buying a house and having kids. Compare that to someone who bought a house, invested their money while taking a loan for business school. Just because they made a different financial decision, why should their loan be forgiven?

Forgiveness is only for those who are victims of suboptimal decisions or suboptimal circumstances not for those who made good choices and had not unfavorable circumstances

If you went out of state or to a private college, you should be stuck with the loans. Many people with less means went to state schools or community college. This was the reasonable choice. Any forgiveness should be capped and not apply toward graduate loans.

Agree here. Cap out the forgiveness at the max allowable loan amount for dependent students. Don’t pay off the student loans for the people that continuously got degrees because they had no direction.

Student loans shouldn’t be forgiven and no, you should not get benefits for paying off of your debt. If you’re old/mature enough to take out debt, you should be old/mature enough to pay it back. Pretty simple logic.

So to everyone here....if the option was given to help people who made mistakes in order to give them a second chance...you would choose not to because you didn’t make that mistake in the first place? So you would rather let them suffer? Man humanity is inspiring.

@SC1 I agree that funding educational programs and scholarships should be prioritized much more heavily. But if we do eliminate student loan debt it increases spending on other things and real estate purchases. Which will only be a massive boost to the economy. Rn probably not the best idea but in the future I think it’s something to consider.
