I (31 yo) left agency for a really stagnant, boring and dead-end (but cushy) corporate comms role (been here for 3+ yrs now). I've freelanced a lil bit on the side and I'm thinking of doing it full time, but I worry that i'm too used to the structure of my work and might not have the drive for freelancing. Anyone have tips, insights, opinions on this situation or on going freelance?

thank you!! didn't realize it existed

Interesting to have the self awareness for a question like that, I feel when we accept a cushy job that puts our brains and (heart!) at ease, we must make use of that phase and use our energy to give ourselves the gift of fitness and health rather than think about "oops I am so comfortable, my mind will go numb" I mean life is mix of so many areas and play is a very important part of it, most of us fear cushy makes us old, it does not, and if freelancing seems like a bit of trouble, that's because may be the right kind of projects haven't come in front of you! Is there a career trajectory that could use your communications background and give you an opportunity to try something absolutely new? Then try it. From Design Strategy to Website evaluations ( ones which let you see heat maps of the user navigation), from Tech's role in Sustainable solutions to Circular Economy, so many new paths are cropping up. See if something excites you that does not require only Communications but a combination of two fields and go after it.

I keep falling back to what I know and it’s no longer working. Thanks!

Looking for suggestions on how to break into this space.

I'm a RN who's worked in sales for 14 years within the industrial and energy spaces. Yea, I know, super random for a nurse, but I excelled greatly.

I still work weekends as a nurse and would love to combine my business acumen with my education by working for a pharma, biotech, or medical device company.

I've applied for these types of jobs and get nowhere. But when I apply to engineering organizations I get called immediately.

Additional Posts in PR and Communications

I made the switch from marketing to PR this year. I basically went from having 15 years of experience to being a newbie in a different subject matter. I miss creative development for ads/web/video, having more tactics to integrate into strategies, and the leadership opportunities I had managing junior team members. I don’t miss 50+ work weeks and measuring success from my stress level. I like my team, but I feel underutilized. Should I sit back, relax, and enjoy the ride for a few years?
