I absolutely hate that HR essentially forces me to attend diversity workshops on how to be a successful Hispanic. Efforts should be focused not on race but economic background... am I the only one?

No firm forces any diversity initiatives on anyone. OP is ridiculous. Don't want to attend, don't. But the programs are meant to be helpful for those who struggle a sense of community in a largely white straight male workforce.

like

As a URM Director, I have “never” been forced to attend any D&I workshop. Furthermore, what your describing is illegal. You “opt” to disclose your race, therefore I just find this post ludicrous...

like

And Hispanic isn't a race. And economic background is linked to race regardless of individual status for OBVIOUS HISTORICAL REASONS

like

Not sure what this forced attendance business is

like

Economic background doesn't account for cultural differences and expectations though. Your idea is outdated and contrived and not even fully thought out

like

I'm hispanic and I have never been forced to attend anything nor do I know anyone who has been either so not sure what you're even talking about.

like

Also, how do you focus on economic background — statically speaking one’s racial identity would be the closest way to do that. As a URM it’s makes sense to “assume” based off data, I come from a socio-disadvantage economic background but that’s not the case. However I know I am a outlier ... so it doesn’t offend me. If anything I appreciate the firm looking out / trying to provide oppts.

like

You should give that feedback instead of acting like your firm forced you to go to a meeting...

like

That part is valuable. The "this is how this action made me feel". That is valid feedback. It's not, however, valid to denounce the need for race based diversity efforts...

like

"essentially" or "not at all"?

like

Also when you decline, HR reaches out to your partner & engagement manager without your knowledge to “release” you from client commitments and tells them you need to attend this program, and then says they’ll book your accommodations it’s pretty forceful putting you in a position where you don’t really have another option but to attend. Perhaps just overly aggressive HR but I was pretty annoyed

like

It's all bullshit.

like

That's a really innovative idea. So you're saying that the economic identity you grew up with shaped your personality and you could more appropriately target the skills you are over or under developed by childhood social class. Wonder if there is a way to test it.

Yes the two race and economic background are correlated but instead of setting up workshops based on race (Latino, Asian, African) do it based on economic background. Economic background is a far more accurate predictor of success (and therefore the groups that could most benefit from additional professional support groups) than race.

Perhaps my annoyance is why I’m beating up on this program a bit too harshly... I know it’s good for people to have these networking opportunities I just strongly dislike the way this was handled

That's to ensure that people who want to go aren't being forced out of it by their upper management

Because having it done the way it was does make me feel targeted for race... like if I would’ve declined and no follow up, other than maybe a there’s still space if you’d like to join email, it’d be different. Sorry frustrations taken out on fishbowl post.

A1 fair, I overreacted... :(

No sweat 👍🏾

Not sure which workshop you're talking about OP, but I attended the Select Senior Conference and had a blast. It's basically a firm-sponsored mini-almost vacation and I networked with a lot of people outside my group that helped my career. So maybe those workshops will turn out more helpful than you think.

My work is highly focused on inclusion and today, while driving through the park, I felt bad for laughing at a group of larpers. They have nerf combat gear, too. I tried hard not to be insensitive to them being their true selves but i laughed … hard! And now I feel bad for laughing at them.

If we didn’t have Trump in the oval office, would we be having conversations about diversity and inclusion on a National level? 🤔

Parents are deciding between moving to WVirginia vs Virginia for retirement to be closer to us based in fairfax, va(ideally be at 1 hour driving distance). They currently in the mid west but WVirginia appeals to them because of low taxes, low cost of living. We are also poc so appreciate some diversity. What are some areas you would recommend both in Va and WV? What else should they consider prior to house hunting? Dad likes to garden/farm as well so looking for homes with large backyards. Tia!

A WM was just named DEI lead for our department. He keeps talking and writing messages in ways which prioritize the aggressor’s feelings, the aggressor’s safety, and “positive intent.” He also talks and writes about “How to not jump from kindergarten to college in one conversation when it involves DEI.” He never talks or writes about inclusion or making things safe for BIPOC. I just needed to type this . Thank you for reading.

We are having our 1st “Share the Mic” discussing: Diversity in the Workplace. Weds 12.16@12PM EST. Details: While it is widely known that sexism and racism are prevalent in the corporate sector, how has that affected you? Are you aware only thirty-two white women, three black men, one Latinx woman, and zero black women head Fortune 500 companies? Did you also know some people might be surprised to learn that discrimination is also rampant in philanthropic and non profit institutions?

It’s absolutely contrarian that this show up on a job application. If we are trying to get away from labeling people, then let’s get away from labeling people. (Let’s say I’m versatile, which do I choose!?) Oh, methinks I’ll just stay unemployed then.

San Francisco vs LA for early 20s? I’m currently in Northern California and I’ve lived here my whole life, and I want to move out of my parents’ house in a few months but am really debating between SF and LA. SF is the more logical location, but I’ve always loved Southern California. My closer friends and family are in SF, but I wouldn’t be alone in LA either.
