I like this more than I thought I would.

That person is stupid. Rolex makes excellent watches based on timeless designs they originated.
Lots to hate on about Rolex, as I did in my lengthy “brands you don’t like post,” but they make objectively high quality pieces.

I’m probably not enough of a watch nerd to have an authoritative opinion, but I believe that while Rolex are indeed some of the best in terms of reliability and accuracy across a large-scale production, their approach is to improve on established solutions with materials science and obsessive production engineering (which are cool in their own right). When I think of innovation in mechanical timekeeping I tend to think about Seiko (Hi-beat /dual escapement / Spring drive), Citizen and that crazy Frederique Constant monolithic oscillator that never gets mentioned for some reason. But to the original point, no question in my mind that Rolex watches are technically excellent.

Depends what you benchmark as good. If you’re bottoming out at holy trinity, then yeah, Rolex falls short. But otherwise, Rolex makes high quality pieces even if their designs are flashier than I prefer and their brand experience is miserable.

What are you basing your opinion on? Your question is impossible to answer.
I don’t think Rolex is more durable or reliable than a $5K Omega.
Maybe we could just admit we prefer certain brands because of… reasons and get on with our lives. There’s nothing rational in justifying a Rolex even at MSRP.
I mean, it was a conversation about luxury watches. We checked rational at the door.
Rolex makes phenomenal watches. I don’t necessarily agree with the premise of your point about them being second to none in terms of “durability and reliability.” There comes a point of diminishing returns on those attributes and with a luxury watch other factors come into play (finishing, buyer experience, technology, innovation, real life wearing experience)
That person is just being a snobby, online jerk. Don’t worry about it. Rolex is a great brand that almost always touches a watch collectors wrist at least once in their lives
I have had my gold Rolex DateJust for 30+ years and it still looks and runs as well as it did on Day 1. That said, I do take it in about every five years to have it thoroughly cleaned and serviced.
