If you live in an at-will employment state, you can quit anytime and just pay the bonus back if you have to. Don’t let them bully you. Clearly, it’s time to go.
Healthcare has been pretty toxic since 2020. It's like compassion has been lost and replaced with selfishness/hate.
100% correct! Once someone is given a leadership role they lose all sense of compassion and only care to show their power over you, resulting in creating a toxic and abusive environment…just to show they’re the boss smh
Explain to her that if you stay, you will lose your mind. Trust me, I am in the same situation with my job and our mental health is more important than a "job"...
I paid back the bonus, because my mental and physical health is more important
Read your contract well
YEs definitely read your contract. All of the info should be in there somewhere.
Im also working in a toxic environment 🤨. It always seems like it’s in healthcare lately. Yes, we have shortages everywhere in the ER and everyone is doing their best and most of us make sure to get out of the area for 15 minutes even if it’s to see daylight and come back refreshed but managers and upper level managers forget that it’s not what you say but how you say it that spoils the mood and then it becomes a toxic place
correct!
Talk to HR.
This is why I declined the sign in bonus. If it crappy where I am starting I will leave. Period.
I say check to see if you getting a retention bonus means you must stay. i say leave that shitty environment asap and look to see if your contract is at will. I have had experience where my manager basically convinced me to stay at a job I clearly was struggling in and made my life a living hell. besides, it sounds fishy when they are forcing you to stay at your job you want to leave anyways.
Not your problem. I paid mine back (once they sent me the letter asking for it). And never looked back. Congratulations!
First - You can always quit. Don't ever let anyone tell you otherwise. This is not an indentured service. Second, as everyone else stated, check the contract, you have a copy of it. You may not get a last check is all. Or you may have to pay something back. But, it's all a life lesson. I don't accept sign on bonuses for this reason, I need to be able to walk if I find myself in a legally compromised position, which happens a lot in healthcare sadly.
yes sure. Thank you.
I’ve heard of other places doing this as well
You will probably have to return that retention bonus but, yes, read your employment and other contracts you received from your employer.
If you received a sign on bonus then you're obligated to stay for the minimum of a year, but if it's a holiday bonus then that's a different scenario.
I experienced something similar in my previous role. The govt contract was won over by another company so they offered retention bonuses (a laughable amount) and made it clear that if we left within 1 year after acceptance/ receipt, we would have to pay it back. I already had an offer lined up and did not plan to accept it anyway. Read your contract and discuss with HR but keep an open mind that you may have to pay it back. Just like it's called, retention bonus, so it's given as an incentive for you to stay. If you decide to leave, then you may have to return it. Best wishes in your new role!
yes that’s what my supervisor told me. I might give back, and I would. Thank you
Speak to HR, may have to return your bonus.
Type hereTell her the job is bad for your health, and you will work it out with HR unless they took your bonus out of her paycheck! It sounds like she is worried about her increased workload in the near future without a bonus.
true that! She never hiring anyone since 4-5 years ago, instead the current techs, she hired and promoted them to Supervisor position without experience, and By the way I’m the only one to work nights and now when I’ll be gone, I don’t know who will cover. She created this whole mess and don’t know how to fix it
I paid it back. Not worth my time and stress.
Look carefully at the wording in your contract with an outside lawyer— many specify that you just must still be working there. This is common place in finance. People quit their jobs after bonuses all the time.
Retention didn’t come from her but govt. ppl left after receiving it.. u don’t have to pay it back
