I always feel weird about the “Proud of this work” posts I see on LinkedIn. Proud? It’s an advertisement.

Let people find joy 😂 Wow. They invested time in something and were happy with the outcome of their hard work.

Real estate agents are proud of a sale. Landscapers are proud of project well done. If you don’t think you’ll ever be proud of something you work at every day, seek out a different career.

1) pride in your work is healthy

2) if you aren’t proud of your work you need to either up your skills or find a role more suitable for you (either is fine, no judgement)

3) LinkedIn is a hub for people vying for their next role. It’s all about self-promotion, so what would you expect?

4) Part of humanity’s collective misery is not being able to do work that satisfies one’s soul. Most people have no option: their work is predicated by basic needs of survival. A career in advertising is totally optional, so why do it if one isn’t proud of their work?

5) it’s OK to let other people be happy

Nothing wrong with being proud of what you make in a career! Even advertising.

It takes a lot of hard work and luck to get a decent piece of work made.

Let em have their little moment

likefunny

There are a lot of people that take pride in the work they do. The craft behind the production, the countless meetings it took to sell in a crazy idea, the amount of hours it required to finesse the script or the finite details that lead to the launch. We spend soooo many hours at our job. So many ideas we come up with never see the light of day. It’s worth celebrating when it can all come together in the end.

Says the person too proud to call themselves a copywriter.

Agree. Post your work. That’s not my issue.

I get this. I think it’s cringey when people act like press or media that’s given to a campaign was earned, when it was actually just paid PR. I’m proud to get work across the finish line, but there’s nothing to be proud of when the Today show covers your campaign just cuz you had good comms partners.

Here’s the thing. Our world, right now, rewards those who appear to be emotionally open, everywhere, all of the time. It makes you uncomfortable. That’s a natural response that I relate to. However the truth is that those who are able to swim through social media like a fish swims through water will be rewarded. Those who choose to stay humble, will have to try other strategies.

I know a guy who (along with millions of others) got laid off at the beginning of the pandemic. He posted a video of himself to social media, crying about how deeply this impacted him. Lo and behold he got an even sweeter job a month later. Is this cringey? Yeah. Was he legitimately upset. Yeah. Lots of ways to slice this, but you get my point.

I’m actually okay with people posting work and saying “proud of the team…” or “proud to have made this…” etc. it’s the “humbled” or “humbly honored” posts that give me the eye-rolls. Self-promotion is the opposite of humble. Call it what it is.

I don’t know if it’s the same Writer who posts all the industry hate or if all Writers hate the industry, but something’s up 😅

The implication is that nobody in advertising should be proud of their work. Which might be your argument but is a pretty grim commentary on what I presume is your chosen profession.

I often question what it is I do and it’s value but I still take pride in what I and my team makes when it’s deserving of it. I try to apply the filter of “is it actually good” and remove myself from the equation but pride doesn’t directly correlate with value to a particular audience, it’s a sense of accomplishment based on your criteria for success.

When people check out your agency, they check the social channels. That’s why the work is there. And proud is the most versatile term one can use with veracity.

If you can't take any pride in what you do, then go do something else. Sounds like a pretty miserable way to live your life everyday. Some of us actually like what we do, and are genuinely proud of making things that create some impact for our clients.

I use to think something similar to OP. I was raised that any accomplishment I had was expected, there for not an accomplishment. Then I met my fiance, who's an artist. When he makes ANYTHING he's so proud of it that it's all he can talk about for, at minimum, the day. It was really annoying to me at first. But then I noticed the immense amount of joy he got, and that got me thinking. How much joy have I missed out on because I didn't celebrate my wins? I've been actively trying to change my mind set and celebrate my small wins, and it feels good.

My point of this antidote, is maybe OP could learn a thing or two from the people sharing their pride of their accomplishments. Might find joy beyond what they've already experienced.

Food for thought.

Any thoughts on buying a house South Dallas (south of i-30)? Saw a house that I liked in a gated community around $375K 4 beds, 3.5 baths 2,600 sq ft but the surrounding area is sketch! I've lived in coppell for 5+ years now so I am spoiled to say the least and don't know much about proper dallas and surrounding areas. Any thoughts on south dallas and future potential is appreciated.
