I'd be in for a pub gathering for sure
GAD in NYC salary? Go! :)
Anyone take the CIPM recently? How was it?
Have you been at the same company for over 3 years? Gotta make the jump. And when you do, do not seek 20% more from your current salary! Your target should be 20% or however much from the salary you SHOULD be making (use salary.com or something to see what market it in your city)
I sure have.. Thank you for this!!
If you’re agency, change every year or two. I jumped from 65 to 85 to 110 by switching jobs every year and I’m honestly a terrible employee
Ha, I was being a bit hyperbolic. I’m a perfectly fine employee and I get my work done, I’m just not a “kill myself every day to hope for maybe a 3% raise” person when it’s easier to make more bouncing somewhere new every few years.
I agree, it sounds like you need to jump to a new agency. I would try getting your foot in at one of the bigger NY/LA agencies since many of them are offering remote work now. Even if they want to start you at a lower position, it would be worth it in the long run. Work your way up to VP/SVP then jump into an executive position in-house at a big company in an industry you love…at least that’s what I would do.:)
It's only a shame if you're prioritising money or job satisfaction. I don't know what market you're in, but 80k at 30 does seem terrible to me. I'd much rather make a reasonable salary and be happy at work than jump across agencies for salary bumps alone and end up somewhere I hate going to work each day. And as many said, senior staff at agencies are usually paid quite well, you just have to work to get there.
You’re not getting paid enough. Find a new company if you can, because the one you’re at sounds lame.
try to get experience with technology + social network client accounts while at the agency, which will make you more marketable for jumping into an in house role in tech. Or as others have suggested, jump to another agency gig for 20% bumps (minimum)
Are you in-house or agency? Agency salaries are great as you climb the ranks.
You have to move. It’s pretty much the only way to meaningful jumps in salary.
I would also push you on your own potential growth. At an agency, if you really hyper commit you should be able to jump levels quickly.
Also-what is your years of experience and industry?
That sounds great. Then I’d look at other factors too:
- what industry are you in? B2B tech is where the money is. Entertainment or hospitality, not so much
- consider looking into moving markets. Move to a bigger city (assuming you aren’t there already) for bigger earning potential
- look into other agencies. I find small agencies have a lot smaller budget, they go up for midsize with the large having the highest potential. So a move to a new place of work (which should give you a boost as the other posters say) can help, but moving to a larger place should also help
For reference for myself, I am B2B tech in the Bay Area with 7 years experience. I’m at a little more than $100k at a midsize agency, but know that could/should be $110-$120 at a large agency.
Come to Zeno! Salaries are competitive 🙂
Hi! I’m not OP but I am considering switching from advertising (media) to PR. Any chance you’re open to discuss your work?
