Agree with SA1 there.

Had a 6-month secondment to the Paris office and also moved to Tokyo for 2 years.

Great cities as tourists only but, perhaps, it might have been a better experience if I spoke to local language fluently.

In my experience, it’s just like practicing in the US except you’re exhausted from the time difference, the AC is a joke, and people smoke a lot more (and sometimes inside 🤮). I couldn’t recommend it. Cool for a short period of time but international work is really rough after awhile.

Has anyone worked out of an international office, but kept working solely for their U.S. practice group as before? Not touching any foreign law, etc., just new surroundings?

Same shit no matter where you live.

I spent a few months during WFH traveling internationally, but not out of any specific office. The hours could get rough for sure because I kept ET time zone hours. But the off time (if you have it) is a lot more fun when you’re in a EU city and can travel on the weekends.

Told my gf (26) that I don’t want to buy a house with her because it is more straightforward for both parties if we keep things separate until marriage. We have been dating 2 years and renting together for 1 year.
I (29) suggest she uses her money to buy property separately whilst I’m happy to continue living together, whether it’s at my or her place.
She adamantly refused and cried and says we are buying together and she doesn’t want her own place.
I was calm and reasonable. What do I do?

Anyone else who feels that they want to step into the more analytical/executive/operational/financial side of business?

I feel that as a corporate lawyer, you’re mostly doing the necessary details to carry out someone else’s decisions (= EG the boring part of business). The most "strategic" advice you give is perhaps advising on a choice between transaction models.

Would only a law degree and big law transactional experience be sufficient to go into more traditional business roles?

When we’re all comparing/complaining about hours at the end of the year are we including pro bono hours in that total? What’s better? Being an M&A partner at a firm with PPP of $4-6M or PPP of $1-2M? Just thinking $1-2M is already plenty of money so if there’s some recovery of work/life balance as compared to the $4-6M PPP firms, which I assume would be the case, then I’d be drawn more to partnership at the $1-2M PPP firms. Any thoughts? Prefer my marriage over prestige

When you’re slammed, but all the associates in your area/practice group are slammed as well, how does your firm/partners handle additional work coming in? Is the expectation that you literally bill 70 hours a week or 14/15 hours a day or do they shift work to other offices and associates in maybe slower practice groups? I’m already on track for about 215 this month and keep getting buried. More work keeps coming in and I’m on the verge of a breakdown.

Is it harder to meet billables in certain practice areas? I’m in T&E and in busy times I’ll be working on 15 different clients in a single day. I feel like I lose so much time task-switching and my billable hours also don’t reflect the mental load I carry around thinking about all the moving parts for so many different clients.
