I am 2 years out and have a secretary for the first time. How do I use her? I’m use to doing everything myself at my prior firms.

Document processing. Creating heading styles and shells for discovery requests and depo outlines. Calling court clerk for anything. Reimbursement processing. Binder prep. Setting up meetings and finding time of people’s calendars.

This is how I usually use my assistant.

like

Holy shit can i have your assistant? Mine just complains about the partners, complains about scheduling too many depos, and almost had a heart attack when i asked her to file something at 4:02 (she leaves at 4, was done by 4:05). She also prints out letters and shows me the one typo instead of just fixing 😂. My group shares an assistant and our PG leader is just too damn nice/non confrontational to fire her.

like

Paperwork like reimbursement forms. Calling the court (court staff prefer to talk to non-attorney stuff for whatever reason). You can use them for discovery shells and things like that, but be wary of using them for really substantive matters like discovery responses, or worse, drafting an actual pleading shell aside from the most basic pleadings.

like

Making calls, filing docs, processing checks, calendaring and similar tasks.

For one thing, you can start by asking her how to draft questions that don’t sound like...this

As a new relationship it might be appropriate for you to talk to her, and ask what she’s used to doing and trained doing, what she’s comfortable with and let her lead that part of the conversation.

My secretary is called an office manager. She answers the phone, greets our clients in person, drafts cover letters, monitors our office bank accounts, prepares and sends out bills, processes client payments, manages our calendar, schedules our CLEs, orders our supplies, handles our monthly bills (internet, printer lease, etc).

As far as legal documents, motions and forms drafting, we have a paralegal who does that for the firm.

Is it considered bad etiquette or inflammatory to ask my company to not have me listed on the company’s website?
My company is asking us to put bios on our their website complete w/photos, “qualifications,” & interests. My job gives me an entry level job title but I do so much more for the company than what my title implies and am poorly compensated. Since I also do freelance work and consulting I don’t want potential clients to see my lower job title & hurt my personal branding. Bad idea 2 ask?

TMI… 7 weeks and have been struggling with constipation (also 2 months post egg retrieval = lots of hormones). Have tried stool softeners, laxatives, Metamucil… now it is literally just tiny bits of mucus coming out, no normal BM. Has been 10 days since I took a laxative. Has this happened to you? What kind of doctor do I even call or what can I do?

Hello! Does anyone have any book recommendations that fall into the realm of wellness, health, nutrition, fitness ( maybe even spirituality) realm! Basically anything that’s helped them it doesn’t necessarily have to be a self help book I really enjoyed atomic habits and how not to die ( although I don’t agree with everything it’s still a good read that made me@aware of my overall vegetable intake)

Some context: Yesterday morning managing attorney comes in legitimate screaming at me because I forgot (for the first time in over a year of employment) to lock the door when I arrived, he then brings up something that happened earlier in the week where I didn’t get clients payment info, instead emailed assistant to run payment since I’ve never been taught how to accept payment.

I'm really lost in my career. Started out in ID and hated it, jumped around and made it out of ID to my desired area. Been at my current firm almost a year, but it's totally toxic and I'm likely being pushed out. Trying to make it work and stay here for as long as I have as I've jumped a lot in a short time and frankly I don't want to jump again. I had the chance to go back to ID and work for an old mentor who is incredible and go back to doing what he does (continued in comments)

How long until someone is pigeonholed into a specific litigation area, generally? I started at a V50 firm in a different practice area, switched to plaintiff’s side securities litigation and am in my second full year of this practice. I like the firm and like the work, but am cognizant that at some point I need to decide if I am sticking with this or want to broaden my practice. How long does someone generally have to make this type of decision? Im a 2018 T14 grad for reference if it matters.

Does anyone know if in a negligent supervision case against a school district if it’s any kind of mitigating factor that there was not enough money for the school to hire more staff?
