I am 23 YO, just graduated undergrad from a non-target school, and am currently working in tech consulting for a B4 firm. My long term goal is to land a technology operations job with a large PE fund.

What steps should I be taking now to make this goal more feasible? What types of exposure should I be looking to gain?

Also, I wouldn’t mind going back to b school if that’s what it will take to get in the door.

Recently was put on the bench and freaking out about being on it too long. Unsure if my career niche (government) is for me. Honestly struggling and hoping I can find a new job but no where is biting.

If one wanted to move closer to SWE / data science at tech companies, what is a good intermediate role to take? Or should one just resign and start post-grad school / boot camp?

Anyone else done this thing for several years but still haven’t gotten a senior title? I’ve been consistently employed at agencies & been fortunate to work on some cool projects but feels like so many are ahead of me.

When do partners decide when an associate is good enough to make partner? I’m a senior and it is extremely clear to me when an associate has it or doesn’t, and moreover it doesn’t take eight years to figure it out; it takes just one or two matters for me to know if they’re adding value or are ultimately just a commodity. It’s hard for me to avoid the conclusion that associates are largely being strung along by partners who are going to can them at some point, long after that decision is made.

How is WLB in biglaw lit (west coast)? Just want a life that isnt constantly under threat of ruined nights and weekends, and lets me live a relatively predictable work life. Going to a firm after clerking and feeling nervous.

I'm a new first year associate, almost two weeks in. Have to ask: is it normal to have almost no idea what's going on? I know my teams view me as completely clueless (which is 100% accurate), but whenever I ask for an explanation/they go over something with me, I'm still left feeling like they're speaking a different language. The PE culture is sick. The 20 something VP was rude to our partner because our team took thanksgiving and the day before off and it was in the engagement letter that we were gonna be off. He kept emphasizing that his team did our job while we were on a break. Dude we are not sick like you and we have lives. I see something about how s**t the PE culture is in every deal we support.
