I am 3 months into my new job as manager of operations for a healthcare organization/hospital. I have 3 years of experience in healthcare admin. I have an MHA degree (master of health admin from Penn State) with a bachelor's degree in exercise Phys. I am also a clinical exercise physiologist. I get paid 60K with my job. I am getting paid too little? Any thoughts?

Hi there! Congrats on the new role and best wishes! I’m going to give you a little hard truth and a little bit of background of corp. pay structures while trying to keep it short. Genuinely trying to pass along some insights as I have found there is much confusion.

1. Leave UPMC
2. Did you get your MHA immediately after your bachelor’s ?

I previously worked for 5 years on a small healthcare strategy consulting team (in Pgh) - we touched every operating dept. across the integrated network including master plans, partnerships, M&A activities, clinical Ops improvements, all of the modeling for Covid, CMS and DOH.

Pre-pandemic we called a joint ELT meeting with the 3 largest care providers in the region and lobbied to raise RN wages. UPMC as largest employer in state of PA is a big market mover, raising RN wages would raise the wage index across PA and subsequently raise the CMS reimbursement rates and further the reimbursement offered by payors (insurance) as rate determination is always based off of CMS first. There’s a lot more context but the short of it is that UPMC declined. UPMC turned down increasing their own revenue (which would’ve increased greater than labor expense) in order to keep wages low and prevent revenue gains to competitors. It also leaves patients more exposed to financial hardships of affording healthcare. The competition was willing to let a rising tide lift all boats and UPMC was not.

1. UPMC is a big safe org, you’ll probably never lose your job but your growth will be slow and stunted and you’ll always be underpaid bc they can.

GO WORK FOR THEIR COMPETITOR! You’ll be more challenged and less safe, but you’ll grow and gain far more and you’ll be treated and compensated much more fairly.

2. As for MHA - universities over promise this to students right after bachelor’s. Effectively tell them that they will be managers right away. Truthfully you are a little fortunate to have gotten a manager title in only 3 years at UPMC. But they probably got you on the cheap. Ideally you want your education or credential achievement to coincide with when you are eligible for a promotion so that you can leverage your investment into income right away. If you get MHA immediately then you get hired in entry level and you get internal standard ~7% (UPMC #) increase upon promotion rather ~20%.

Overly simplified but hopefully this helps, already too long.

Congrats and good luck!

That sounds super low. What state? Is cost of living that low?

like

Pittsburgh, PA. The cost of living is 3 percent higher than the national avg.

Very low! Manager role with a Masters always 80+

like

Your salary seems lower than one would expect given your credentials and current market trends. It might be because you’re working for a large health system.

It’s because it’s UPMC.

I’m a operations manager and only have a bachelor’s in healthcare administration. I make 85k. Your definitely being underpaid.

This is way way to low

Yeah. Way too little. But at the same time if you are a CEP and not just a Certified Exercise Physiologist (EP-C), then you may or may not have your MS degree in the field and that might possibly be why they are shorting you…I’m in Clt NC, have my MS and originally have my ACSM RCEP, then changed to the CEP…and make that as a lead CEP, if not more.
