To push back a little here - why in the world would you want to do that? I moved to PE on the “older side” (e.g., 25) and man is being as associate brutal. The lifestyle is far far worse than anything you face in consulting, the comp is marginally better and your job security is materially worse - all things I barely wanted to face at 25 (coming from EM role in consulting) and you could not pay me enough to do at 35. For context, all the other junior associates are 22/23. Even if you do make the jump you’re likely to come in as a junior associate, grind for 2 painful years and then get asked to leave. Why would you want to give up seniority and a career path on a <1% probability outcome you make partner in PE (chances for those on a “traditional” path aren’t even much higher than that)? Take it from someone on the inside at a good fund - it is 100% not worth it to try for someone in your position. I know there’s a culture of “I’m non traditional but what if” on this bowl but I’m here to tell you to steer clear.

Totally agree with this

It’s going to be tough, usually the folks from consulting who go into PE on the investment side at least have some CDD experience under there belt. I was in legacy OTS as a junior and made the switch to IB myself because of this reason but I know that’s not feasible for you at this point, or not desirable. Wish you the best of luck, maybe a smaller shop in a tier 2 or 3 city would be more receptive to your background but you’re going to have to find those and get yourself in through brute force and aggressive networking.

Thanks, I have done a few diligences but not CDD but generally have an idea how it works. I know it’s tough, but I think there has to be a way. Thanks for your reply!

Similar to IBA1, you could try some “consulting-friendly” PE firms, probably in T2 or T3 cities. I’ve heard that a few times but not sure who that includes. If you want some more harsh news, I spent a couple years on PwC’s integration/separation team and could barely get PE people on the phone. Not saying it’s impossible though

26 is young, I was a staff1 in big4 at 25.

Another point to consider…say you beat the odds and do get a role on an investing team. Without investing or deal experience it would likely be at the associate level. At 35 do you really want to go through the grind all over again?

Thinking of taking a title downgrade to associate to go to PE ops. It’s not a huge deal, want my cosmetic surgeons contact? 😂

Near impossible, especially without CDD experience. All of your experience is post-close. More likely to get an Ops role but that will still be tough. Out of curiosity, what made you want to break into PE now?

like

What types of diligences have you worked on? ODD? While ODDs are applicable, they are more helpful for getting on the Ops team versus the Investment team. Without investing or CDD experience, you just are competitive against other candidates. Easiest move would be to try and get on a few CDDs and then talk to headhunters.

The odds of breaking into the investment team are very very low unless you have a network. Especially if you have no real deal experience and are learning the basics now. You might face a hard career reset. The Ops team is your only realistic option to break into PE. Nonetheless, I suggest that you contact headhunters and gauge their opinion.

Seems to be an uphill battle given less relevant experience and already quite entrenched in career. Good luck OP!
