I am 40 this year and just made director. Was in industry for 8 years, post MBA but never joined strategy, a mistake for the short run In hindsight. Need advice on if it’s too old to make EP at some point. I am in Canada so it’s a longer path. Am I too old? Also - how do I skip income partner, seems most companies are pushing most folks to go through IP to goto EP. Real advice and thoughts would be welcome.

Not sure what these terms mean? Income partner vs Equity partner?

likehelpful

I’d start looking at industry opps if I were you. EP handcuffs you to the firm and in this crap recession that’s a lousy situation to be in.

Thank you

At my firm there was a 10 year vesting period for new Partners and Managing Directors that meant once you were promoted to that level, you had strong incentive to stay for that full period. With this in mind, and mandatory retirement ages at the back end, I was given advice that the financial incentives meant you should be an equity partner by age 46. Otherwise, the non-equity MD path would be better choice. Does the structure at your firm sound similar?

Nothing at all. Just trying to see if it’s worth it! It’s 3 years to IP another 3-4 to EP

If that’s what they mean. I’d say just stay with it as long as you like it. It really depends on the firm and the comp package.

I assume income partner = non-equity partner?

If that's the case, what does the timeline to make non-equity partner look like? What about from non-equity to equity partner? I assume that would be equivalent to a D>MD>P trajectory.

Does your firm or other Canadian firms you're looking at have a mandatory retirement age? If it's, say, 55, I would be leery of pushing for P if you have a 3-5 year expectation at D and MD levels before making P.

I mean, sure, you possibly *could* make P at 50, but I would question the financial calculus of making it only 5 years before retirement.

Welp I’m nearing my first month into this AAE position, and now I’m realizing why I should’ve really seen being hired 30 min after the last interview as a huge 🚩🚩. I’m on 4 accounts and all of the previous AEs are transitioning off completely, essentially leaving me as the account lead. I do have two directors who share my accounts but they literally started a week after me, so I’ve really been getting crash courses and left to swim. Not totally a problem, but considering my title and salary…
