I am a 2nd yr insurance defense attorney thinking about making the switch to transactional law. Can any transactional attorneys (esp those who switched from litigation) comment on 1) how difficult it was to switch, 2) if you enjoy your work more and 3) if the work life balance is better?

Honestly, dying to do the same. I’d love to hear thoughts on this too!

I haven’t switched, but as a junior transactional attorney, I can say there is no work life balance. Deal work mean availability whenever the work comes in and we usually get documents back Friday night so say goodbye to all your weekends. Just a heads up to consider!

I didn't transition from another practice, but am a 2nd year transactional. The work is extremely boring and unfulfilling. Litigation inherently provides much more of an opportunity for creativity than transactional. If dratfing purchase agreements and board consents is how you want to spend at least 2000 hrs/yr, then have at it.

I switched from transactional to litigation 1.5 years in. I would not recommend transactional for work/life balance. You are at the clients’ whims.

That was just my experience in residential and commercial real estate transactions. I absolutely hated it (residential more so than commercial) because you constantly had to keep the client happy and keep the deal alive. It’s a weird dynamic and I didn’t like it lol

Can anyone advise on how to pivot and break into consulting firms? I don’t necessarily have a preference of which firm, but I’m looking for something that has a range of sectors I could pursue (I’m very interested in public sector, though). Do these types of jobs usually require a referral? Any help is appreciated! My background is in the arts/nonprofit sector and also philanthropy consulting. Really wanting to pivot but perhaps not going about it in the right way. Thanks in advance!
