Aww, don’t feel embarrassed. We all took different paths to get to where we are now.
Someone I know is an analyst in their 40s. Super popular, have a ton of hobbies, been doing some martial arts for 15 years, well travelled, well invested and takes good care of themselves. Superb credentials but chose to prioritize other things over work.
Me, I have a ton of lifestyle issues (out of control BP, pre-diabetic), have gone up a size since the pandemic, haven’t seen the inside of a gym in over two years, no friends, no hobbies (Netflix a hobby?), drink to drown my sorrows over the weekend, haven’t seen family in over two years, zero WLB, working all the time. Made SM at 30. Pitiful investment portfolio. I resent work and resent myself for being so freakin boring. If I continue this, I will be dead from boredom or from a lifestyle disease.
Bottom line is, don’t feel embarrassed by your designation. Feel embarrassed if you have done nothing to develop yourself personally or professionally. Live a full life and don’t chase empty titles you will resent later cause you gave up too much to get there. My fancy, expensive marble tombstone with gold engraving will not make me any less deader than anyone else but as the man lying inside I know I would have died with a million regrets.
First step is recognizing these things. Implement the changes and be happy. Chase happiness. Crave it. You’re going to be in a much better position in a year maybe less. Stick the course!
You know I was working in a project in which I was an A and the other A had 12ys more than me. Don’t worry, you are much more mature and that will pay off down the line. You are racing against yourself, not against the people close to you
I started in the same boat as you! Some of those sharp younger people have even surpassed me, so I get those moments of comparison and embarrassment. But don’t let it get you down! Keep making progress and know that this is a great way to close the gap - you get so much experience, so quickly and you can take that wherever you want to go!
My two bits of advice: pay attention to anything that you think is giving the younger folks an edge (tech skills what it is for me) and try to close that gap (for yourself and to keep competitive) and even though you aren’t the same age, make connections and stay friends with the other associates. I find that cohorts of younger hires are great at information sharing and so make sure you’re not checking out on them because they aren’t your same-age peers (also lots of great people come through this field - you’ll probably make some fun young friends too!)
It’s all in your head, Ditch the stinkin thinkin

Started my analyst career post grad at 31. Now a senior manager at 36. Stay humble, learn as much as you can, and make aggressive moves when the time is right.
We're all on our own path. It's important not to try not to focus on a few sticking points. I'm sure you've had experiences that are valuable to you and your career that younger folks haven't. Who knows, maybe you'll promote faster.
Also, there's always someone faster/smarter/richer/better. Run your own race.

It’s ok I’m the same age or older than MDP here and I’m at C still 🤷🏻♂️. It’s life, focus on you and improve from the older you, don’t compare with others
Same here! You are not alone, OP. Happy to commiserate if needed 😂
Comparison is the thief of joy

Came in as a l10 at 29. I also felt embarrassed and left after promotion to l9
I started as a L11 at 34.
In the end it's you against yourself. Fuck the noise and judgement. Marathon, not a sprint.
When I was a 24 yo analyst there was a 40 year old senior analyst I worked with. Chilliest dude I've ever met lived his best life outside and inside of work while I was STRESSING and getting my life & career together.
Was always incredibly jealous of how happy he looked and felt all the time.
I know people in their 40s and 50s that are still analysts. I thought it was weird at first but they like the job and are comfortable with it. Different strokes for different folks, stay on your path!
You are only ever competing with yourself. All that matters is getting a little better every day. You’re on the right track
Keep your head up, you just need to make sure to keep excelling so you get to where you think you should be
I was hired as an L10 at 34. I felt a bit old compared to the other 10s and 11s, but also found that I was able to bring a lot more to the table than the other younger folks, yet still learned a lot from them. It works out, but I agree, it’s a strange feeling when you are significantly older than everyone else
I’m 58 and started at my company four years ago. So from my perspective, “Whaddya even worrying for, kid?!” 😊 Seriously, do your best not to make this an issue for yourself. I’ve embraced it, joked about it, and it instantly puts others at ease.
