Hi. I just want to say that there will always be a better candidate and that’s the reality of how interview works. Someone might actually meet 100% of the requirements for the job you applied for so what can you do to set yourself a part? Your personality. Let it truly shine during an interview. I’ve been through hundreds of interviews and not everyone is going to be match. I remember applying for a job and I loved the job itself but when I met with the manager, I knew he and I would not get along. I also suggest getting a LinkedIn if you don’t have one. It’s a great place to find a job. I’ve found most of my jobs through LinkedIn. I completely relate with you as diversity hire. I remember sitting in a town hall recently and 95% of the people around me was Caucasian. I hope you the best of luck while looking for a position. It’s rough out there but you’ll find one.
Its more about how you carry yourself -confidence- than skills. Believe in yourself believe you have what it takes and go for that interview with confidence! Im minority too and ive always had great interviews and great offers at great firms.
Rising Star
No interviewer is interested in getting to know the interviewee, they expect you to deliver what you bring to their table, that means you should be asking questions about the job, understand their staffing needs and sell your strength.
Thank you! I will keep that in mind
I’m a firm believer in if they like you….they like you. You can tick all the boxes you want but if they can’t see you as a good fit it won’t matter. Agree with the other poster, let your personality shine through, smile and ask good questions. If you struggle to build rapport, do your research before interview on the interviewers, do they have LinkedIn? Look at their career path and some of the key things they get involved in and subtly feed this in as part of the the process. Humour is good! Best of luck.
Just being real here but I've been to interviews before which went really great, only then to be ghosted. It's because they just used me to fill their diverse candidate criteria. Its a strange feeling you get when it happens but when you know, you know. I'm very careful when recruiters reach out to me for this reason. And very conscious because I'm a woman 'tick' and I'm black 'tick', so it's easy for them to use you in this way. I make sure I focus on doing the reaching out myself and I tend to only interview where I've come across someone in the market or by referral. If you are a highly capable candidate and you fit the diversity metrics it should be easier, not harder, we just have to be careful.
Same difference 🤣
