I am a first year associate and I got an offer to join the L&E practice at Lewis Brisbois for $140k with a 2000 billable requirement. Thoughts? I’ve read a lot of negative reviews but they mostly seem to be about the low pay of around 100k (mostly for ID work).

I work in the LA office in L&E. I came into Lewis as a 5th year attorney and have been here about a year and here is my two cents. Compensation aside, I think there are pros and cons to joining as a first year. Pro is that you will get to do lots of substantive work. This is not the type of firm where you will get shut in a closet and expected to do document review. Because of the volume of cases and constant workflow, even as a first year, you will be expected to really do the legwork on your case. However this is a double edged sword. Because the work is almost all insurance defense, quantity over quality is definitely the MO here. Similarly, you will likely not get much guidance or mentoring (they like to call it a “sink or swim” approach). Turnover is high. Depending on the partner you work with your experience will differ but the general sense I get is that the focus is on just slapping together the work product and getting it out versus challenging you to grow and become a good attorney. Feel free to PM me if you want more deets.

Agree. That is a lot of hours for not a lot of pay. The market you’re in does matter but is there really no other shop in town offering a better deal? I am in Minneapolis and made $144k as a second year for 1850 hours. Now make $180k as a fifth year for 1900.

But bonuses aren’t very hefty. At least mine aren’t.

I think something is off. I know someone who just got an offer there for 120k and is a fifth year.

L&E in CA

That is way higher than my first year offer there! In my area the setup was 90k and they structured a 10k bonus around you hitting your hours each quarter. Pretty stingy. However I thought the L&E work I did there was really interesting and the partners were cool and mostly approachable.

Serious billing question - if during the course of the day, you first receive an email from Client A at say 11:10am and you read it, you then respond to it at 12:20pm. You get another email at 2pm from Client A and respond immediately. The next email comes in at 4pm, you read it and respond only at 4:30pm. None of the email responses take more than 3-5mins. You are working on matters for other clients at all other times during the day. How much are you billing for Client A?
