You are going to (1) become familiar with the processes and procedures for complex document review and production; (2) develop expertise in at least on area of substantive law relevant to your cases; and (3) take on drafting responsibility for substantive parts of correspondence or court filings.
I would say depo experience, motion drafting and courtroom experience
Don’t say second chair a depo. It’s prep assistance. Second chair implies you can participate. You can’t. A party can only have one attorney examine a witness.
Pick substantive responsibilities: draft a motion, first-chair a hearing, take a depo, etc
Litigation experience is great, but also include a goal or two directed at career/business development for the long term. There are so many facets of this practice that partners may not think to include you on, but involve skills that are necessary moving forward. Some ideas: ask to attend a bar/trade org/networking event or client meeting together to observe how the partner connects with potential clients/referrals and how the partner pitches the firm’s services. Make a goal to have lunch with 2 of the firm’s top client originators and interview them on how they found success building client relationships and trust. Or perhaps make it a goal to shadow a partner’s initial screening call with a new client to see how the partner evaluates the value of a potential claim or provides advice on the fly. These examples really only require internal coordination with a partner, such that you can definitely accomplish them. Litigation experience in your first year may not be guaranteed depending on how your firm is structured and how complex your cases are, and because the client will need to sign off. Taking a depo your first year is a great goal, but might not happen, so give yourself a couple softballs
This is a great idea!
Increase realization ratio
Increase client interaction
Etc.
Check if your firm has benchmarks for each year level. That will give you a good idea what your group thinks you should be able to achieve by the end of the year.
