I am a first year currently in a corporate m&a practice doing some privacy work. I have the opportunity to transition to 100% privacy work if I want, but I am torn. I do really like privacy work. However, I was really only planning to stay in big law long enough to be marketable in-house. I'm worried that I will be less marketable if I become a privacy specialist so soon. Am I overthinking this? Should I just lean in to what I like?

Privacy is a booming speciality with a lot of in-house opportunities. You will probably be more marketable as a junior privacy specialist than you would be as a junior M&A monkey.

Privacy is hot and in demand! Way more need than M&A in general in tech.

Just kinda depends on what will be your long term goals. Happy to provide some insight on both side (Work mainly with privacy, my husband was an M&A associate and transitioned out in-house in various roles!).

Now I am not sure that was fair decision for me or not.

CTC was almost same.

Working on a busy project with a first year and it’s their first big project since starting big law. I’m also a junior, but not a first year. I am kind of shocked at how inefficient the first year is. They’re just barely getting the work done and I assume that’s all you can ask for. But because of that, more and more keeps getting added to my plate. Trying to be compassionate, but it seems like they don’t really care they’re not doing a great job - they log off early, don’t always turn in work.

I’m a lawyer based in Europe. I’m lateraling to a firm in a new jurisdiction on Monday and negotiated a decent pay increase a few months ago (new jurisdiction has significantly higher income taxes so negotiated based on a comparable net pay). My old firm has just announced it is increasing salaries by around 15% which will almost negate what I negotiated at new firm. New firm doesn’t review salaries till September. What are my options here so that I’m not out of pocket?
