I am a junior associate. A senior just asked if I had “time for a quick call” tomorrow. What are the odds this is something bad? I can’t think of what that would be, but I’m paranoid.

None, I guarantee they just want to go over an assignment.

80% chance that you’re prob gonna get staffed on another matter that just hit their desk. Means they like your work and like working with you.

like

Can you comment again tomorrow and let us know what it was

like

They’re moving firms and wanted to let me know/ let me know that if I ever decide to switch they’d love to work with me again!

likeupliftingfunny

Definitely more work. Depends on whether you think that is something bad.

like

I don't see why it would be bad. 99% this is just an assignment, since they are a senior not a partner. 1% you fucked up real bad and they are going to ask you not to do that again. Even the 1% scenario is nothing to worry or lose sleep over.

Why do superiors even send these emails? Didn’t they get anxiety when their superiors sent the same, cryptic emails to them? For that reason, I (1) don’t sent emails like this to my juniors or (2) if I do, make clear it’s nothing to worry about (and likely even give the gist of what I want to talk about). The only time I can understand an email like this is when it’s to a superior and to discuss something sensitive (like leaving the firm, etc.).

like

Agree completely. Email writing definitely becomes a lot more scattershot as you get more senior but come on, man - it wouldn't kill you to take 5 more seconds to say "just want to catch up about X matter, thanks"

like

As soon as my partners email me asking to call them or that they want to discuss X project I did for them, I get the mini paranoia too. I came from a pretty laid back corporation a few months ago where you were lucky if an employee wrote an email that didn’t contain a LOT of exclamations, so I’ve come to learn it’s (so far) just the partners being mega formal. That or like the others send, I’m about to get more work and they want to give me some background first.

like

You’re about to get staffed on something.

Our employee satisfaction survey is tied to our performance goals. Meaning, if we rate management badly, we cannot meet 10% of our goals which in turn affects our bonuses and raises. We asked HR but they didn’t do anything about it. Is this normal? Is this legal? If not, what else can we do about it?

I was talking to my husband yesterday and he mentioned feeling anxious most of the day, and I realized that he used to say that sometimes when we were dating and I never understood why he would be feeling anxious but not know why/have a reason he was anxious. I just hadn’t experienced it so couldn’t fully relate. I can now say that after 3 years in biglaw, I do understand and can relate. Sad what these high stress/ high hour corporate jobs do to our mental health. No real story, just sharing.

Let’s talk about envy. I find myself feeling envious of those who have more than me, in terms of money and material possessions. Man this Bowl is filled with some angry mid-levels. We get it, this job was hard for you, but it is for juniors now, too. Stop punching down.

I don’t think the juniors are entitled, they just want to share in their firms’ wealth. Surely any salary increases for the Classes of 2019, 2020, and 2021 would easily pay for themselves through billable hours.
