I am a lawyer (based in the UK) and have been practising for 15+ years (financial services/banking). I love being a lawyer but I would also love to do something more creative or more independent. Have an interview with a company I really want to work for tomorrow. My last job I was laid off b/c of an acquisition&recently accepted a job at a diff company b/c I couldnt afford not to. I have a request for interim relief pending before the court filed last Tuesday. It usually takes 1-3 Business days for a disposition. It’s now going on the 5th business day. I’m a third year but only 4 months into a brand new practice area. At what point should I feel like I can handle a new client with little to no direction from the partner? Truthfully, I feel like a first year all over again (most days) even though I’m enjoying the new area (from ID to construction/real estate).

Second year associate here who recently switched from litigation to corporate law. I am absolutely swamped while simultaneously having no idea what I’m doing ever and I’m feeling so burnt out. I’m a in-house transactional attorney who is very interested in international arbitration. How does one get experience/ learn enough to land a job in this field?

How do y’all deal with burnout? First year already billed 1900 since Jan. I feel like I’m tired and uninterested in work all the time now.

Which one would you choose?

1) Am100 firm with 1900+ billable hour requirement, very reputable in the region
2) Am200 firm with 1750+ billable hour requirement, less reputable in the region because it’s a satellite office, pays $35k less than option 1

Probably a foolish question: are bonuses based off of raw billable hours or billable hours modified by the partners?
